Can the Panthers afford to go Offense with their 1st pick in the Draft?

so we pick a DT with a top 5 pick even though there really aren't any that should be drafted there?

meanwhile we fail to pick up a legit franchise OT and top 3 pick in matt kalil who could fill a huge need that we have at RT? sorry....but that is a plan that has fail written all over it.

No. We don't draft a DT with a Top 5 pick. We do what will be an extremely easy move to pull in this year's draft and drop down 6-10 spots and grab one of the impressive DT's on the board. Then, in the 2nd, we draft defense, then, in the 3rd-we draft defense. Then maybe we will consider drafting an offensive player.

There are OT's to be had in FA if the coaching staff feels it's a need. Today's game certainly won't make them feel that it is.

Guys in 07 the panthers had a lower pick that didn't require as much ammo to make a deal happen.

The only thin I can think of would be someone like Washington falling in love with Landry jones enough to make the move.

Kalil just makes too much sense. It fits with every single thing the panthers do and fits with hurney's history. Remember he got his stripes during the hog days in Washington.

There's no one pick the panthers could make to fix their offensive line, defensive line, and special teams.

True, but with the Rookie salary cap now in place a team moving up no longer has to invest the money they once did in order to sign a top pick. Makes it easier to make that move I would think.

I know you like Hurney, the move on Day 1 of the 2007 draft was perhaps Hurney's finest hour.

Kalil won't play rt in Carolina.
i keep on saying RT just because that is where we are weakest and that was where we stuck otah, but i agree. they'd probably move gross back over to RT and let kalil start at LT. i could see them waiting until the following year to move gross to RT and have kalil start at LT, though.

Yes, because drafting mid round DT's really did wonders for us this season.

So we should just sign a big name veteran DT to fix it then. Oh wait. The market is bare, there isn't one to be found. Alright, then we will just have a blockbuster trade where we solidify our defense. Oh, yeah, those don't happen either.

Drafting an OT with our first pick would so beyond the realm of intelligent moves, I'd probably quit being a fan until Hurney was fired.

Matt Kalil is the best option really, or trade down. With the rest of the picks being Defense. With Beason back and possibly TD (even in a limited role) makes a huge difference. And our D will grow the more they play, they are young and dont have their D leader on the field : Beason

Ive not said a thing about salary numbers.

do you understand the concept of compensation? Or is your thought process basically "trade down, something something, super bowl?"

there are no OTs in FA that are anywhere near the quality of kalil. there rarely is and if they are, the cost is waaaaay to high.

we don't pass up on a guy like him if the need is there.

if kalil isn't there, then we trade down.

I still don't understand the whole "trade down, we don't need to reach for defense". What the hell does that mean? Claiborne, right now, is ranked 3rd overall by Scouts Inc. 3rd. So, if we draft second, take him, OMG WE REACHED~!

I believe Otah will be back and healthy next year, fingers crossed, but when he's healthy he's one of the best in the game. Look how good the OL was in '08 when we drafted Otah. Image Kalil, Kalil, Gross, and Otah on the line. That would be sick
