Functinal Alcoholics

really no such thing as a functional alcoholic. if anything, your health will keep you from functioning eventually. it's easy to think you are functional while the booze is fooling you, but just the fact that you mentioned that you are hiding from your feelings is a red flag. they are there for a reason.

I respectfully disagree.

Ive know plenty (and still know one or two) folks who cant get through the day without a drink. And Im not talking about dont want to, I'm talking serious DTs without a taste before work, at lunch, and then crawling in a bottle at night.

Hell there are some weeks that I float dangerously close to the edge.

edit:

To finish the thought that for some reason I cut off mid way through the post.

...And they hold down regular jobs and are outwardly fairly successful.

I went to a holiday party on Friday.

Only had about 4 drinks, maybe 5, and ended up puking for the first time since college.

My wife was in shock, she had never seen me do that.

I'm thinking the food got me too, since I can and usually do drink WAAAAY more than that at holiday parties.

The experience was so horrible I think I'm good without booze until Crimas.

nah, I'm good.

Thinking it was cheap booze plus cheap food plus my wife's erratic driving style.

Woke up the next morning fine, even worked out.

Still, booze doesn't sound too good to me right now, think I'll put myself on restriction.

The OP should lay off the booze too.

I'm a nurse and am slowly coming to the realization that I might be a functional alcoholic... Are you one?

So my questions are this; are you a functional alcoholic, and if so is it necessarily a bad thing? It seems to help me get through week to week. It's also easier then having to feel feelings. It also makes awful Panther loses a lot easier to handle. I know at the Vikings game I spent a god-awful amount on beer at the stadium and later at the bar on liquor to forget that loss!

So what say you huddle?

Edited to say that the error in spelling in the thread title was due to me being an alcoholic

Does it affect your job performance in any way?

Does it affect your family?

I think if the answer to these two are clearly no (and you need to be perfectly honest with yourself) then we are past the biggest problem parts.

You put what you think is too much toxin in your body and it makes you happy? Personal choice especially depending on the amount we are talking about. A 5th of Scotch a night compared to a few glasses of red wine is important.

When I worked as a Construction Electrician, I could have been considered as a "functional alcoholic". Hell, we all were. When we worked out of town, showing up to work drunk or hungover was totally acceptable.

I an not an alcoholic, they go to meetings.

I'm just your average run of the mill drunk. :D
