Dan Connor

Myth- Connor is slow- he ran a 4.6 in his pro day. Beason ran a 4.6 on his pro day and he is fast.

Truth- Beason is better instinctively and is better changing directions, running laterally and has more fluid hips. Connor has difficulty changing directions, has a slow first step, and not much recovery speed. But flat our speed on a punt return, Connor is fine.

Myth- he isn't strong. Beason 19 bench reps, Connor 19 bench reps.

Truth- Connor is strong enough to play the position and a great tackler. He will better over time with more experience.

Hopefully, when someone is talking about speed and the NFL, they are regarding all the things you mentioned. Speed is a rate at which you do things, not the rate at which you run.

Yeah but no one just runs a straight line in football. When people say Dan Connor is slow, they judge him off his game speed and everything that is required as a LB.

Game speed means a lot of things. What people see is that he can't cover running backs and tight ends in pass coverage. That doesn't make him slow, that makes him a 2 down back not well suited to playing in a nickle defense which is why he goes out when we play a nickel. That is not the same as slow. Moving forward into a running gap or chasing someone around the edge he is fine.

All that matters is that when it comes to on the field speed, whether it's changing direction, back pedaling, etc., Connor is on the slow side. Who cares if he ran the same 40 as Beason. It obviously doesn't amount to anything.

Not true. If he can't backpedal or change directions it means he shouldn't be in pass coverage, but he is fine in run defense and on special teams. As long as you know what you have and you plug them in appropriately you are fine. Not all players have the same skill set. Because Charles Johnson has trouble changing directions does that mean he shouldn't play DE?? Or maybe it means he shouldn't drop into pass coverage in a zone blitz scheme too often.

He might be fine in run defense, yes. But how does that make him fast. It doesn't. One of the biggest reasons he is not effective on passing downs is because he is not fast. We are talking about how fast he is, not how effective he is in certain schemes.

He has great instincts. You don't lead Linebacker U in tackles if you don't have instincts and an eye for the ball. That's why he is effective. But I just don't think he is quick enough to be an everyday starting LB in the NFL.

Lol oh my god 40 time and bench press.

Quick tell us his 5 k and how much he can curl for all the difference it makes.

The combine is overrated and doesn't always translate to producing on the field.

Theres a few good things about it. Cone drills for running backs are really good indicators.

Things like jumping straight in the air and running in opposed in a straight line do nothing at all.

Drafting based on the combine is how the jets select Vernon gholston.

But bench press is the dumbest lift in the world unless you're a bro working out in a cutoff polo shirt.
