Week 10: The bad new and the good news

Everyone knows I am an eternal optimist so after losses in typical homer fashion I try to look for positives. And in order to stay humble I look for negatives when we win. Here is my list for this week and I look forward to the "tl;dr" post that will inevitably come ;):

Bad news: We just got our asses kicked by an average Titans team

Good news: Sometimes it is a good thing for a young team and QB to get humbled like that. Although it seems preposterous for a 2-6 team to be overconfident; the string of games that we could have/should have won against some pretty good teams may have led to some complacency. The team may have thought, "we are good we just have been unlucky". An embarrassing loss like this forces you to pay more attention to detail and realize that you aren't as good as you thought you were, even at 2-6.

Bad news: Cam looked frustrated, confused, uncomfortable, and like a typical rookie on Sunday. The Titans clearly did something he hadn't seen before and as a result he held the ball too long, was rushed, inaccurate, and he bailed on some plays too early.

Good news He is a rookie. And he has been on the brink of elite all season before this last game. There is only so many wrinkles a defense can put in. Just imagine how good he will be once he has seen them all and knows how to counter them or has a better understanding how to diagnose a defense before the ball is even snapped allowing him to get rid of the ball quicker.

Bad news: Our defense gave up another 100 yard rusher and 23 points. Still too many penalties, blown coverages, and missed tackles.

Good news: They actually overall didn't play that bad. After giving up the long TD pass on the Titans first drive, they forced 5 punts and 3 field goals until the 4th quarter when they were gassed and the game was out of reach. The defense has shown marked improvement since the Atlanta game and that is even more impressive when you consider all the injuries that side of the ball has had to endure.

Bad news: We just went 1-2 in a home stand facing the weakest part of our schedule.

Good news: We still have several winnable games coming up and a chance to end the season on a high note giving us some confidence and momentum headed into next season

Bad News: Our next game will be against an angry Lions team that just got embarrassed.

Good news: Ditto. I expect a pretty intense game on Sunday.

Why have we gone away from the read option, as well as other exotic looks? I've notice this in the Vikings game as well.

My guess is (at least against the Titans) we were in a 14-0 hole so quickly that we probably bailed on our running game and offensive game plan too early. Plus we tend to use it more in the red zone. Which we only got to once yesterday

Just a guess.

Cam was frustrated because the OL played like garbage. Tennessee's gameplan was fairly simple. They were able to generate lots of pressure with only 3 and 4 guys and that allowed them to drop 7 and 8 men back into coverage leaving very few holes to throw into. including a spy. There was nothing exotic about. They lined up, bent our OL over the table and showed them who the men were. It was humiliating considering their DL...well sucks. The worst part is that most of the pressure came through the middle. You'd expect Bell to have some games where he struggles, but he played no worse than anyone else.

We got beat with Foxball. In other words, the Titans did to us what we used to do to the Saints regularly. That's the problem with having this style of team. Does Rivera have the coaching ability to keep this team tough, to keep them strong. We are a strong running team now because of the players who are remnants from the previos regime. As time passes and Rivera gets his own guys, will he keep them tough? Will they be able to go out their and pound the rock in the snow in December and win? Once he gets guys that fit his system, we will still have the necessary balance to be an elite team in this league that we have most weeks now?

It remains to be seen. I certainly hope so.

In the last 2 games we allowed the Defenses to dictate what we did on Offense. What I loved so much about our Offense, is that we created miss matches with our TE's and dictated what Defenses would do.

In last nights game Tom Brady and Gronkowski totally dictated what the Jets did on Defense. We need to get back to that. I know it's easier said than done, especially when you don't have the proper protection.

Right now, The Golden Calf of Bristol is one of the worst QBs in the NFL but u wouldn't tell it by the fact that his teams helps him win. Not the Panthers...They expect their rookie QB to have great games every Sunday and the defense and special team can just continue to fug up cause Cam and the Offense will get the job done. Giving up 20 plus points on an average to ur opponents weekly isn't "playing better."

Yesterday's game should be a reminder that a team is only as strong as it's weakest link and Cam nor the offense are the weakest links on the Panther. All the Titans showed when they "shut down" Cam was how pathetically bad this team really is without him practically doing everything, every week.

If the Broncos can figure out and fix their weakest link, then why can't the Panthers. This is week 11..Enough with the excuses of the teams youth and injuries. Other teams have new head coaches, youths and injuries but they find a way to win because they really want to win and they go out and play that way.

I am beginning to believe that many of u intentionally focus all of ur attention on the offense and expect more out of them because they are playing the best out of the rest of the team. But that's the wrong mentality. U need to demand that the rest of the team catch up to the offense. Especially if u don't want what happened on Sunday to happen again.
