Some of my friends do not get the message when it is time to go.

How do I nicely tell them to leave, without telling them to leave flat out?

In general... make one hint that you have other things to do... if they don't take said hint... say, "sorry, but it's time for you all to leave" Then if they don't leave... kick them out.

tried many strategies over the years, my favorite is playful bluntness. Say what you mean, in the bluntest way possible, but say it as if it's a joke.
