Titans say they got in Newton's head

The Titans’ defense did a great job of shutting down Panthers quarterback Cam Newton in Sunday’s 30-3 win, and afterward they said that they could see they had gotten to Newton mentally.

“You could tell that he was getting frustrated,” Titans defensive lineman Jason Jones told Jim Wyatt of the Tennessean. “He was flipping the ball and doing stuff like that. As a defense, we wanted to keep getting in his head, man. Even when we didn’t get to him, we wanted to make sure he saw us. And that’s what we did.”

The Titans sacked Newton five times, forced him to fumble once, intercepted him once, and kept the Panthers’ offense out of the end zone. They also forced the Panthers to punt eight times.

Newton’s post-game comments suggest he was every bit as frustrated as the Titans thought he was.

“This is embarrassing,” Newton said. “This is as poor a performance as a team as I’ve ever seen, poor performance by myself. I know I could’ve done a lot of things better. We had more three-and-outs than I can even count.”

To be exact, the Panthers had six three-and-outs, and they also punted twice at the end of four-play drives. Newton knows other teams are going to be watching tape of the Titans to figure out how to shut him down.

“Whatever they did, it was effective,” Newton said. “In this league, this is a copycat league so we can best believe the next team we’re playing is going to watch this film and try and do the same thing, but this can’t happen again.”

f*ck them, they didn't shut him down, Chud did.

You want their formula?

Pressure on 1st cause a huge loss, 2nd we usually ran and they blitzed 1 or 2 extra guys, 3rd drop everyone into coverage and pressure with just the DL.

They did it almost every possession and we made no adjustments.

Shocking here, but there's a lot of over-reaction going on here. Sometimes you just get out played, period. The wind was taken out of our sails a bit with the PR for TD, but then we came right back and drove the field and were about to score when Olsen fumbled. After that, we lost all momentum and got far behind and their D line absolutely destroyed our O line... no we didn't play well, but it happens.

Bad O line play, horrible penalties and the fact that they had Cam running for his life half the time on top of pretty good coverage, they just flat beat us.

Sorry... you guys continue on with the ranting...

You forget saying BOH to Bell causing a flag and a 1st and 20+

Well that was one of the routes they took as well...

They key was to cause a loss on 1st down, which they could easily do because they were sending pressure and we kept running long developing plays (7 step drops, tosses, etc.). Once we went to 2nd and 10+ they pinned their ears back. They wanted us to pass because they were playing the pass so nothing was open.

It was a simple defensive strategy, they just executed it so easily because Chud was calling a horrible game.

All the pressure they were sending and I never saw an actual screen to the HBs to make them back off until the 4th quarter. That was a horrible game but I put it on Chud and then Olsen for getting the snowball going.

Also, a sidenote, Cam should pay attention to his snap count. That is the one thing I'd put on him.

Several times he snapped the ball they sent an extra guy and Cam snapped it as soon as the guy got to the LOS - he essentially gave the blitzers a running start and the OL/RBs didn't adjust.

Got into his head, frustrated him, etc, etc..... I dont care who the QB is - when you are getting beat up and punched in the face all game your not gonna be a happy camper. The TN defense was very aggressive and good yesterday. Any QB would have been frustrated in a game like that.

imo, the biggest thing that shut him down was the oline acting like it's made out of wet paper bags (esp. that undrafted rookie that we have starting who has no business starting but we have to because the worthless fat guy we traded a first round pick for has no heart and was born without a spine).

the receivers (TEs included) really let him down as well. when naanee is your best receiver, something is wrong.

other than that, cam played like a QB playing behind a piss poor oline and garbage for receivers playing on a team that was still on vacation and against a team that actually planned for a win.

the game was won in the first couple minutes. the moment we got our first 3 and out we were done.

It seems as if getting into Cam's head fustrated the entire team. None of the receivers could get open. The punter fug up and the kicker forgot how to kick. And the defense...Oh well, it's clear the Titans didn't get into their heads because they played the same.

I definitely agree with the first part there... the o line got killed yesterday.

I don't think however, that Nanee was the best WR out there, I think that the Titans made a real effort to cover Smith and the TEs and force Newton to look elsewhere...
