PS3 has free online play and it uses the 2.5in sata HDDs found in laptops. I think in the long run you're getting a better value with it.

140$ does sound tempting though even to me but when you take into account the 50$ a year for the Xbox live service and a considerable cost for a large HDD for DLC content, the deal is not so lucrative.

For just 110$ more you can get a 160GB Playstation 3 and you'll never have to pay to play online with it. You'll be spending 100$ if you buy just two years of Xbox live. Also a 120GB 360 HDD will cost you 72$ on Amazon.

You already have a PS3 I see.

Good contribution to the OP's thoughts, now here are mine to yours.

PS3's online play is ok since it's free but nothing to write home about. You get what you pay for when it comes to PSN. The hard drives are really irrelevant unless you want to get into system modding. Doesn't matter what form factor it is or isn't.

You aren't required to pay for Xbox Live, you can still be on XBOX Live for free just can't play games with others. $50 for what you get on XBL is easily worth the asking price as well based on what you do get. Unless you are a heavy downloader 4GB will do you fine. Plenty of room for game saves (you'd never fill it up without DLC).

@ OP, go for it man. Take the plunge, $140 for a new 4GB slim, Kinect ready console is a steal. No matter what anyone says.

What would you do on XBOX Live other than play games online with friends and strangers?

I've got a PS3 already, won it at an IT "business card" fishbowl drawing a couple years back. It sat in the box for 6 months before I even played it. I was pretty late to the party on this round of consoles, and there's still a lot of PS3 stuff I've never played that I'd hate to miss out on... God of War series, Assassins Creed series, Dragon Age series... easily enough to keep me occupied.

The $140 price tag is pretty tempting, but I dont know if I'd do the pay to play of XBOX Live, that's probably the deal breaker.

This is why I think Xbox Live should cost more.

Another nongamer off the network.

you can only use non-MS drives to transfer game saves. you can't transfer any patches, maps, downloads like you could on proprietary equipment.

That stuff you can redownload, it's not a big deal. You can, however, install games to a thumbdrive just like you would on the harddrive (the full game that is, etc).

Won a PS3, then waited 6 months to play, but hasn't played any of the games that make PS3 worthwhile.

Prior to winning it, I had pretty much given up gaming. Really stopped around 2003-2004 after college, got a job, got married, etc.

When I won it, I had no real interest in playing it. First thought was check eBay to see what I could get for it, but I didn't, so it sat around for months. One day the guy who services our printers at work started talking nonstop about this new game, COD:MW2, and how it was the most awesome thing ever. He talked me into opening my PS3, and renting MW2. So I did, and that was when I began to get back into it.

Since then I've really only gotten into FPS (with the exception of GT5 and Infamous), and (sadly) put several hundred hours into the likes of MW2, BFBC2, Black Ops. I found that with the kids and wife, the games where I can jump online and play a quick mulitiplayer game or two work best.

So, your right I haven't played many of the PS3 staples from it's earlier days, but it also doesn't sit idle on the shelf. There's enough current stuff out there to keep me busy.
