DeAngelo Williams

this was never about paying him what he's worth.

this was about jerry sending a message to his players, to the fans of this team, and to players (read: future free agents) around the rest of the league. osi umenyura and chris johnson - considered top-tier players at their respective positions - bitched for weeks about how players get paid in carolina.

signing williams for that much was jerry making a strategic short-term sacrifice for the long-term benefit of the franchise.

right side of that oline isn't fine, but that isn't williams problem. he isn't playing well....at the very least not well enough to warrant a contract like he got.

The right side is the most glaring issue, but in reality Gross isn't a dominant run blocker either. Not that he sucks, mind you. he just isn't a road grader type.

I'll give you that Williams doesn't look quite like he used to, but I'm not convinced that he suddenly sucks. Like I said, put a better o-line in place and then we can talk.

agreed with that and i think it really hurt other teams that are going to be negotiating with stud RBs in the future. it hurt us, but it also really hurt other teams.

wasn't implying that williams sucked. he just isn't playing nearly as well as he should and it isn't all about the oline. stewart is able to make more things happen with the same oline.

i'm not letting that line off the hook, esp. after yesterday, but they aren't/shouldn't be the reason for williams not living up to his contract.

Didn't think you were, but others are.

Williams and Stewart are different runners. Each has their own strengths and weaknesses. Our situation right now plays more to Stewart's strengths, but with a better O-Line you have more chances to see what Williams can do.

People thinking we can just go with a one back system or plug someone else in there and have then automatically be just as good as Williams are dreaming, unless they plan on using our top pick on a runningback next season, and I'm not in favor of that (bigger areas of need).

i think we will be able to, but it will hurt us to do so unless williams restructures.

I think he will if he's asked.

You're seriously overvaluing the running back position.

Matt Kalil is the answer to the OL, move Gross to RT and let Otah either be traded if possible or provide depth and/or play RG with Bell.

Good OL and you don't need $100 mil tied into 2 RB's in a pass first offense. Teams are finding productive undrafted guys these days
