Record under GM Marty Hurney by the numbers

Your Philly example is ignorant and small minded.

No one is suggesting we go all out and just sign every FA we can get like Philly. That's just silly to suggest that. We needed FAs at key positions specifically on defense in which Hurney refused to. DT for example. You can point to Edwards, but after he got hurt we did nothing but sign scrubs that Hurney for some reason thinks will change into a good player when really they have been trash their whole career. We also could've used good starting caliber CB. Rogers' deal with SF wasn't that big and we didn't offer him anything. We could've done more at RG as well than what we did. Hangman is good depth but he shouldn't be starting.

And what about a return man? There's these small fixes that could be huge for our team but Hurney just refuses to make those fixes.

And this is just a small thing on a long list of problems Hurney has.

Apparently you have missed tons of posts on this board, and think that I was addressing you in specific. I wasn't, I personally find you angry and unpleasant, and tend to just skim over your posts.

In my opinion, which you do not share, Hurney has done plenty of good in Charlotte. He's missed on some picks in the past few years, due to a variety of reasons. I think he might like the Otah pick back, but when healthy he was a big part of our 12-4 team. I think that had he been able to secure Peppers in 2009 before the draft, that Everette Brown would have gone somewhere else. And I honestly don't know what to think about Edwards yet. He's got some talent but I doubt he's getting worthwhile coaching at his current position.

You made another point about Clausen, which I get. I know that he felt like he needed a QB strongly, and clearly Clausen wasn't the answer. I don't think McCoy would have been either, nor would anyone in that class under Davidson's system. At some point he will probably get a shot to start again for another team. If he does well, Hurney is vindicated, if he doesn't, that's another loss that we thankfully didn't have to endure (no trade was made, just the pick).

For the past ten years, we've been stuck in mediocrity. Prior to last year Hurney was directed to purge the team of veterans; to blow things up and give the young guys a chance. Fox wasn't the right guy for that situation. We went 2-14 with a team that, position by position, was pretty much as talented or moreso than the team that went 8-8 the year before. That's coaching, not GMing. And this year, we're looking at 3-4 wins, again with talent, but not execution. That's coaching. We can't return punts, that's a combination of coaching and talent, and we've tried plenty of talent.

My opinion, with which you so obviously disagree, is that Hurney should stay around, work the cap, and work with the coach to fill the roster just like he did with Fox. In 2010 we had a huge and sudden change in personnel, and went 2-14. This year we had one in the coaching staff, and we're not much better. I'm not in the mood for another big change, I would much rather start winning some games. And changing the GM isn't going to do that right now.

blah blah blah...

The point isn't that I don't understand what you're trying to say, I do, and it's a terrible point.

blah blah blah...

Great, you disagree too. Glad we got that settled.

I imagine the boss wants the team to be competitive.

In a way, but JR called the shots when it came to the recent "youth movement" and movement away from Fox ball. That would take time. At the same time, in 2008 and 2009, we had a lot of talent on both sides of the ball. Hurney builds the roster, he doesn't coach, and we had a decent roster, save for huge problems at quarterback, and Fox had a big role in all of that as well.

Probably most Panther fans would say Hurney, or maybe JR should have pulled that plug 2 or 3 years prior.

I could see 2009 but I think 2008 was too early. But JR refused to fire Fox. In his crazy interview he said he wanted to let him coach out his contract cause people didnt want to have prices raised, but when he was talking on the phone he said he felt he should honor contracts and thought Fox was a good coach and could teach the young guys how to play right.

This team is rebuilding. It sucks, and it's not fun to watch losses week after week, but we pretty much knew coming into this season we weren't real playoff contenders. Today that fact came home, big time. But that doesn't change the fact that this team is building toward something long term.

If hurney had done his job right in the first place then we wouldn't have to rebuild...

Just sayin...

this is true and something I am hoping we see a change.. People who leave out that Fox had 100% say so along with Hurney's OK are quick to crucify Hurney and forget Fox was also a HUUUUUUUUUGE part of players being drafted to fit HIS scheme/philosophy..

however, to win in today's NFL.. not only do you need a QB, but you have hit more than 50% of your draft picks.. Injuries happen, GB went through what we did in 2004 and still won a SB..

GB comes to mind.. NE does not.

5-27 (most likely at seasons end) over the past 2 seasons.

.185 winning %.

If that doesn't get you fired, nothing will. We are rebuilding, because of Hurney, and I see another season of it as well.

Sadly, I have no faith in JR to hire a solid replacement for Hurney. What is JR's record as owner? How many winning seasons?

:confused5:

There is alot of hate on this board toward John Fox and i'm betting that the problem with this organization lies somewhere else.John Fox will be a winner in Denver before Carolina can see where the problem is and i hate it for our fans.I'm sure Marty Hurney is a big part of the problem and no doubt should be replaced soon but if JR is part of the problem then god help us.Cam Newton will be great and deserves to be drafted #1 by us but Ray Charles could have made that pick,we'll see what develops in the front office and hope there will be changes made and even if changes are made it will take several years to straighten this mess out.

Can his ass and hire someone who has been working under Kevin Colbert of the Steelers. That is who this team needs to be modeled after. I don't want someone who has had the ability to lay the team at the feet of a QB like Peyton Manning, Aaron Rodgers, and Tom Brady and say go win games. Roethlisberger is a great QB don't get me wrong but the Steelers have been the ultimate "team" for the last 5-10 years. They win despite Roethlisberger a lot of times which shows me they have a great collection of players. So...Kevin Colbert underling come on down.
