panthers going into this game had a 17.7 ypp... what do you think 415.1 (the number of yards we have per game on offense) / 23.4 (number of points we score) gives you?

the bears are a great example of YPP... if you look they have great YPP because they have a great special teams unit that gives them short fields, allowing the offense to score easier. If it included special teams yardage, Chicago would be much lower, but it doesn't

obviously YPP is heavily influenced by both defense and special teams because if you only ever have 50 yard fields due to defense forcing stops & ST returns then you're going to have a higher YPP because when you score you only had to go 50 yards.

2392 yards passing, 1038 yards rushing = 3430 yards, - yards from sacks, = 3321

if we added in our return yards to that number, we'd be adding in 505 yards in kick returns and uhh what 100 yards on punt returns total? that's not including the weird 100 yard field thing you were talking about which doesn't even exist.

the reality is that YPP, the statistic that you were talking about, is based entirely on yards on offense. it is influenced by, but does not directly include, special teams or defense.
