UFC on FOX: Velasquez(c) vs. Dos Santos

This just reminded me. Do yall remember when Kimbo Slice was supposed to be the next great fighter and he had a hyped up fight and got ROCKED. What ever happened to that dude. I used to love watching his youtube videos in college.

Kimbo was never expected to be elite. He was a circus act. When MMA was rising in popularity those videos of his bare knuckle fights were being posted up. There were a lot of extremely ignorant fans who thought that he could come in off of the street and dominate, despite losing an unsanctioned fight at a gym against a cop from Boston (he gased, which is what many educated fans predicted would happen).

I called Dos Santos by rd1 tko :D that dude is the Anderson Silva/Jon Jones of the heavy weights. Long body, solid subs, great striking, etc. I can't help but think that he might end up like Shogun though after that fight with Roy Nelson. Junior didn't seem like he was as focused on his training (was he sleeping on Roy?) and it showed during the fight.

MMA is mainstream and has been. It incorporates boxing, which always made me question how alleged boxing fans couldn't enjoy it.

I don't think he'll beat Overeem

If Overeem doesn't drop the ball vs Brock' date=' then they need to sign him vs Dos Santos immediately after. That could be a war (doubt it, the big boys have stopping power :p)[/quote']

Dana has already announced whoever wins that fight is the number 1 contender and will face JDS

I think it was disappointing in the fact that, they want to make UFC a mainstream sport, but, all they did was talk for thirty minutes, JDS dominated, the match ended.

There should've have been something else to show how either a) awesome the sport is or b) how violent it actually is.

They honestly should've shown Jon Jones. That dude would've had people watching every fight, just to see if they're anything like him. (Hint: They're not.)

The problem with UFC being on Fox is the same issue when CBS aired EliteXC or Strikeforce (both? I can't even remember at this point) is that networks are absolutely terrified of losing viewers because of the violence. That, as well as the concern that many people are still ignorant about the sport and consider it nothing more than two thugs/meatheads/crazyassholes fighting.

There has to be more of a "production" to entertain as opposed to educate. Unfortunately most viewers either are not interested in learning or are incapable of suspending whatever preconceived notions they had. Couple that with time issues (I think it was EliteXC that was on CBS, but their first card was a train wreck in terms of timing and quality of fights) and other problems that they might encounter.

I don't envy Joe Silva and Dana White one bit in that venture. In order to draw the type of numbers that they want, they're going to have to put up fights that could headline PPV events. At least until they build a steady viewership, then they could start putting the lesser known guys on the cards to let them work up to the PPVs (imo at least).

It'll be interesting to see where it goes from here. I would really like to have more MMA on, but I don't mind heading down to the bar to watch a PPV with a bunch of buddies :D

That's what happens most of the time when the big boys fight...it ends early. Very rare to see a 5rd war in that weight class.

The Guida vs Benson fight was very good wish it had been 5rds.

Overeem will destroy Brock, and I like Brock, but Overeem is a K-1 champion. Brock couldn't withstand an assault from Carwin or Cain, no way he can stand with Overeem and survive. Alistair also has a wicked guillotine so I could see it end that way head Lesnar goes rushing in.

For the boxing homers...its dead. Only 2 guys can draw and they won't fight each other and are getting old. No one likes a 12rd pillow fight, well unless its hot girls fighting.

If they are serious abut making this a "mainstream sport" then put someone up there who will educate the public on the many aspects of the sport, the influences of martial arts, wrestling (the real stuff), boxing, etc. and get rid of these guys who look as though they've been juicing longer than Canseco, have issues communicating with the complete sentences using the English language, and make the Geico Neanderthals look like brain surgeons.

Prior to joining the Minnesota Golden Gophers, Lesnar wrestled at Bismarck State College in Bismarck, North Dakota.[1] Lesnar finished his amateur career as a two-time NJCAA All-American, 1998 NJCAA Heavyweight Champion, two-time NCAA All-American, two-time Big Ten Conference Champion, and the 2000 NCAA heavyweight champion with a record of 106–5 overall in four years of college.

Educate yourself, before you wreck yourself.

You obviously have no idea where the fighters come from, their skill sets, their training routines, etc.

These guys are teachers, engineers, cops, national champions, all americans, etc that learn an art.

You look like the neanderthal when you make posts like that.

BTW, this drew more viewers than any combat sport since Lewis and Klithcko (sp) in 2003.

They tried to educate the "new fans" before the fight and having Dana and Brock do it might not be the best idea but they are the "face" of MMA currently to the casual fans and it was Fox's idea to have them do it. In the future I suspect Florian, Bonner, Glazer, that new dude from ESPN (can't think of his name atm), etc to be doing that type of stuff.

For all you bitching about not being able to see the other fights, they streamed on FaceBook for free, all of them.
