A scary stat for the offense...

Hey out of curiosity how good is our YPP for our defense?? It must be around middle of the pack since our offense is so bad. Do you have a link for that??

edit: I think he got banned again. So I will just put it out there.

Our defense is 29th in YPP.

Again this stat encompasses more than just our defense. I just think it is funny that he has hung so much of his argument on this one measure and our defense is 29th in that stat as well!!

Debates come, debates go, supported by statistics.

The only statistic that matters is Ws and Ls.

The two obvious things to me:

1. Offense's starting field position....the statistics on drives that end in scoring starting

on the 20 yard line back are fairly telling; the longer the drive, the less probability of

a score..

2. Offensive drives that have to only go 50 yards or less have a greater probability of scoring.

The Panthers' consistently get crappy field position by either kick-offs or punts because:

1. on punts, the defense very seldom picks up a 3 and out, thus moving the ball

deeper for our offense to go forward.

2. kick-offs, why even bother to discuss this one.

Add in the obvious of penalities and turn-overs and questionable redzone offensive calls and execution of the same and these things are most probably the answer.

Good teams find a way to win despite inadequacies with one of the 3 parts of the team.

Bad teams don't.

The Panthers haven't found that way as of yet and they are what their record says they are.

Stats is like a thong, it reveals a lot but hide the most important.

Our O is fine. Top 10 in most if not all rankings.

Except the one that actually matters.

Easy explanation for the low scoring

1. Terrible field position

2. A defense that can't get off the field or force TOs

3. Penalties

The explanation for people not being able to understand this

Racism.

There's an easier one: Not scoring enough.

And this lie continues in the face of our D being ranked 11th in time of possession as well as tied for 8th in forced fumble recoveries, the only type of takeaway they are directly responsible for.

This is what makes you guys trolls, not me. You actually have to lie and put out false info. That is what makes a troll, by definition. Someone that just talks negative without anything to back up what they are saying. I don't. I may be pointing out things that are negative about the offense or Cam Newton, but I don't make them up. They are actually true and hurting us. You just make things up. Don't even take the time to look and see if that's actually true. And just because you have 200 other uninformed posters agreeing with you, it doesn't make it true, and it never makes it right.

But the defense actually have an excuse. They faced the top offenses, and some of the most efficient offenses in the league this year, one of the primary reasons their turnover margin is low.

Our offense faced the worst defenses in the league this year. What excuse do they have for not scoring enough and being ranked 21st in scoring efficiency when they faced the worst defenses in the NFL? Legedu Naanee? No, it's a rookie quarterback.

And it can't possibly be racism considering most of our defense is black. I'm racist towards losing though. And the explanation for people not understanding this: ignorance. And ignorance is a disease. And it's 100% true that nobody can ever cure you of this one against your own will.

And you seem to prove this on a daily basis.

PFFL's provided definition for offensive YPP

*An ability to reflect on offense and defense at the same time.

Yet he still can't come to grips with it. YPP isn't an offensive efficiency stat.

I guess ignorance is a disease. And it's 100% true that nobody can ever cure you of this one against your own will.

There's an easier one: Not scoring enough.

We are 6th in the league in points per possession. If we were higher than 29th in the league in offensive possessions we would score plenty.

But our defense would have to get stops or turnovers in order for that to happen.

Oh yeah, and our defensive YPP has us ranked 29th so by PFFL's standard defense is still the main problem

Not to nitpick, but as a clarification, I think we are 30th in offensive possessions (this is per Football Outsiders). Green Bay has had 83, San Diego has had 84, and we have had 85.

You are correct. We are 30th. I must have misread one of the other teams possessions. Thanks. So we are ranked even lower than I thought in that regard.

Solution to Carolina's problems: Have offense as good as Green Bay.

I think you are right, in that I just can't see our defense or special teams making huge improvements in the final 8 games.

It's amazing to me that when you look at the numbers in depth, our offense really isn't that far off of GB's. We are a whole lot closer to them than most teams, including a lot of winning teams.

As much as I would love for us to have a really good #2 receiver, we absolutely have to focus almost exclusively on defense in the offseason.
