A couple of AP quick hits for you

I REALLY hope they don't trade back into the first this year to do that.

As I said elsewhere, I think they would be in a better position to draft one high next year.

I've heard that a lot, but I really don't know if they can get anyone that will be any better than Freeman when it's their turn to pick. Especially if they have another good year, which despite what the Jake naysayers might think, should be expected. Even with a relatively tough schedule, they should still be drafting late enough that there probably won't be a top QB available to them. And although he's raw, Freeman has the basic skill set to be an excellent starting QB as long as he gets a couple of years to learn on the bench...which we should be able to give him.

I'm not endorsing moving up to take him, but I can understand why they would do it. Unless they have a really poor season, there will not be many opportunities to get a QB with his potential, so if they think they can get him relatively cheap, it makes some sense. Particularly since we all know Jake is close to the end, and we need to start developing his eventual replacement as soon as possible. After all, the chances of a quality QB coming available in FA are very slim, and we would still have to pay him a kings ransome. So, unless they feel Moore is the future (which it is beginning to sound like they don't), they have to do something, and soon.

With all that said, I feel we have other needs that are more immediate. We need a DT and DE (if Peppers is traded, as expected) to help this year, so I'm not so sure spending a newly aquired first on a developmental QB is the best move.

I guess it all comes down to whether or not they think they can adequately fill those spots between their remaining picks and FA. What we don't know is how they view some of the guys already on the roster. Do they think Johnson is ready for a breakout year, or has Hilee Taylor put enough weight on and improved his strength enough that they feel he will be an efficient pass rusher? What about Nick Hayden, has he developed enough to make them comfortable with the idea of him being part of the DT rotation? I think those are the questions that will determine the viability of making a move for Freeman, but also questions that we will probably not really get a satisfying answer to until we see them show it on the field.

Won't next year's draft be much deeper than this year's for QBs? That's what I had heard on here, but I'm not that into college ball, so could be misinformed.

If it is, I'd rather just keep our first rounder next year, and not bother with moving back into the first this draft.

Wow, I am impressed by the responses... I figured everyone would be on me for the typical "Sources close to me" threads, instead, people have been really giving their opinions on it.

and once again, I would like to stress that, with the exception of the first tidbit, that everything is pure speculation and it is possible that my source could be wrong.

Last year's crop of DE's and pass rushers was underwhelming and terribly overrated. I think this year's is underrated and will have a few surprises in the later rounds.

I think they front office has really been doing their homework on lesser known defensive linemen this year, which could point to an early pick going to QB with later picks going to fix the line.

In other words, it's not out of the question.
