Penn State...what did Paterno know?

I read the whole thing and Paterno's involvement was a pass through. Paterno is barely mentioned except to show that he acted quickly in passing this up the ladder.

The real question is whether Paterno, when he realized that Shultz and Curley were not reporting this had a duty to take action. We have no idea what pressure Paterno was putting on his superiors or what information they were giving to Paterno. Presumably while these guys were covering up and lying they were telling Paterno something. No idea what this was. Could have been "we are handling it and it may take a while."

It's pretty straight-forward and all in the report. Paterno was told directly by McQueary in 2002 that he had witnessed Sandusky anally raping a 10 year old boy. How there is even a question what he should have done from that point on is so beyond even the most common and basic of common sense.

What pressure he was putting on his superiors? How about a day goes by and Sandusky isn't in handcuffs is too long. Instead, this went on for 10 years and the guy had free roam of campus, hosting overnights for boys ON CAMPUS and was still bringing in an income from this charity.

I'm still pissed at the graduate assistant that saw the rape and did NOTHING.

Yeah, I wouldn't have called the coach, I would have called the cops. I wouldn't have just walked away either, I'd start hitting someone (Sandusky).

I agree. I blame the President and AD more than I blame JoePa. If I go to the AD and tell him and I go to the police I expect them to handle it. Joe didn't have anything to do with Sandusky having an office on campus and all of that stuff. Not saying Joe Pa is without blame but I think there's more on the higher ups.

Are you all ******* high? Joe was told directly by a former player, team captain and current assistant that he witnessed another employee raping a 10 year old in the team's lockerroom, told his direct superior, washed his hands and then went on with his life for the next 10 years completely ignoring that this rapist was operating with total immunity on and around campus with children. It wasn't like someone annonymously slipped a note under his door with this info.

How Joe let 24 hours pass without alerting the police is criminal, or at least it will be in PA when this is all said and done. Joe is absolutely at fault for anything that happened from that meeting in 2002 forward. Any victims of Sandusky from then on out should hold him personally responsible, as they should with Curley, Spanier, McQueary and the rest of them.

I was basing that off a post that earlier where someone said that Joe DID alert the police. I said it before Joe Pa is 84 years old he probably doesn't understand all of this poo and he did what he thought he had to do he told his bosses and he told the police. At the same time if Paterno is too old to understand that ramifications of it he's too old to run a program. I said that Joe had less blame than the AD and the President because at the end of the day legally it's their job to stop it. Sandusky didn't work for Joe any more it was the president and that gave him a office and access to the facilities not Paterno.

Unless I have completely missed something, JoePa never alerted police. That's the crux of the issue here.

And yes, I agree that the AD & President have more blood on their hands than Joe, but it all goes back to the fact that there was no leadership at PSU because of the cult-like atmosphere that had been build around Paterno and his bizarre quest to win more games than Eddie Robinson & Bobby Bowden.

they need to fire Paterno and cancel the rest of the season.

If my tarheels coaching staff would have just molested a bunch of teenagers last year instead of the other violations we would have been in the BCS championship game last season.

Fire Paterno yes, but you can't cancel the rest of the season. The players on the team had nothing to do with and thats not fair to them especially with them having as good a season as they are. And this had nothing to do with the football program anyways. Sandusky wasn't a coach, his office wasn't in the football complex and from all reports he didn't have much contact with Paterno or the team. He was on campus and had communication with the AD to schedule his camps.

I also want to know the mothers of these kids say that Sandusky admitted to them that he touched them a long time ago why didn't the moms go to the police, and if they did why wasn't something done here? Am I missing something from the articles?
