Penn State...what did Paterno know?

Here's what I would consider to be a pretty accurate idea of why this happened, and it's from a Penn State fan whose head isn't buried in a Sahara sand dune.

When it went down in '98, Curley, Thomas and JoePa thought they could make Sandusky retire and that would keep them out of it. Joe was still untouchable at that point, so I'm sure he thought he knew best how to handle it. I have no idea why they gave him the emeritus retirement package, but that's on Joe and Curley. In 2002 Joe was coming off of two 5 win seasons and fighting for his ability to write the end of his story (and keep his boy employed). I'm sure he bullied McQueary - Curley had been party to the '98 investigation and I'm sure Joe and he thought they could solve it by banning Sandusky from bringing kids to the football building without costing them their jobs. They were right for about 9 years. That got JoePa the all time wins record and kept Joe, Jay and Curley employed for another 9 years. Mission almost accomplished. McQueary kept his mouth shut to keep his job.

They simply placed themselves and the Penn State brand above the tender butts of some kids. But whatever, I'm sure their kids were never alone with Jerry. And who really cares about underprivileged kids as long as the diddling was going on out of their sight. I can't believe Joe Paterno is going to coach this weekend. Sickening and disgusting performance by Penn State all the way around.

Dude wake up. Your act has grown stale and tiresome.

Sorry for having a differing opinion. Must be tough to think outside the box occasionally.

Let all the facts come out before you judge. We don't know what all Paterno knew and how exactly he responded with the information he had. Even in the worst case scenario, it's not like he molested anybody himself. People are going after Paterno because he's well known.

It's cheap and lazy.

i will let more facts play out but this is flat out nasty.

If true, it is.

But we will have to wait and see how this plays out in the courts. Can't help but think back to the Duke lacrosse scandal. Different circumstances, but still many were ready to execute them until the facts came out.

If the guy is guilty, he deserves life. If it can be proven there was an attempt to cover it up amongst the senior staff at PSU, then they should be fired and perhaps even some jail time. But right now, the facts aren't all out yet.

He knew a rapist was on campus and running a program for underprivileged kids for almost a decade.

You should get that Stockholm Syndrome of yours checked out.

HARRISBURG, Pa. (AP) — Pennsylvania's state police commissioner says Penn State football coach Joe Paterno and other school officials didn't do enough to try to stop suspected sexual abuse of children by a former assistant football coach. Commissioner Frank Noonan says Paterno may have fulfilled his legal requirement to report the suspected abuse, but that he and others should have pursued the matter with police. Two school officials surrendered today to face charges that they failed to alert authorities, and that they lied to a grand jury.

I haven't heard of Paterno being charged with anything or any pending charges. He did enough, maybe you would have done more, he's not you though.

''Joe Paterno was a witness who cooperated and testified before the grand jury,'' said Nils Frederiksen, a spokesman for the state attorney general's office. ''He's not a suspect.''

Sandusky was running over-night camps on PSU's campus as late as 2009.

Of the child sexual assault charges against former Penn State coach Jerry Sandusky, the fact that stands out most is that Joe Paterno, Tim Curley and Gary Schultz were aware of incidents as early as 2002. Curley testified to the grand jury that he "advised Sandusky that he was prohibited from bringing youth onto the Penn State campus from that point forward." Seven years later, in the summer of 2009, Sandusky was still hosting overnight camps for children as young as 9 at other Penn State schools.

This entire Fiasco just goes to back up what I've been saying for a long time: College football is now a 100% profit-oriented business. It is no longer about the schools, the students, or the sport. It's about TV-deals and money.

Paterno (and the President of the school, whom he told) both deserve harsh fines for making a business decision at the expensive of innocent human beings who were being actively abused. He chose not to bring it to the light in order not to attract bad attention that would hurt his recruiting and media draw. White-collar crime of the worst nature.
