Dispelling the new myth about our offense and defense

1) Smith's numbers have actually been dropping. In the first four weeks of the season he had over 500 yards, he's had under 400 in the last four.

2) Cam competes in number of touchdowns, as well. No, he's not *as good* as Brady or Brees, but 18 total touchdowns is only a couple short of 20 and 21... especially for a rookie.

3) Let's repeat again... Cam is a rookie. Ok?

4) Cam leads all the guys I listed in one interesting category: Number of touchdown drives greater than or equal to 80 yards.

lol @ you thinking Cam isn't a leader because "poor neglected" Steve Smith has only 900 yards and 4 TDs.

It truly is sad that because Cameron is not perfect, in only his first 8 games, he cannot be thought of as a pretty darn good QB. Poor Smitty having to play with this Cam character. We need to get a petition going so Hurney can get us a QB that can pass muster.

Every time I watch a game and see a receiver slow down or adjust his route to catch a pass. I hear these people in the back of my mind saying that Cam is the only QB that does not throw a perfect pass every time.

I have seen some lame attempts to downplay Cams abilities, but this one has to be one of the best, or worst.

My giddy says Cam can, so I believe it. And GOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Notice he still can't account for the real life example from this very year of how YPP is misleading and is a terrible way to judge offenses.

YPP =/= offensive efficiency.

Points per possession is a much even better stat than YPP to determine offensive efficiency IMO (although it too is clearly not perfect).

Carolina is 6th in the NFL in points per possession and 6th in TD per possession.

So when we get the ball we score at a very high rate. What's more efficient than that?

Compare that to Cincy that has a GREAT YPP yet is 20th in Points Per Possession and 23rd in TD per possession.

Because I compare them with league average, not selective teams.

And you also need to divide that number by the number of games they play because we are in bye week time.

Stipulations will not make your statement any more true. I only checked five teams, (Our division foes, and the Lions.) and we are behind everyone of them. The truth is, we are not very good at forcing fumbles. Nothing you can stat me will improve those numbers.

But hey, stat away. Everyone knows how important stats are. We are 2-6 because we are short on talent, not because of some assinine notion of Cams abilities.

Bring in some talented athletes and Cam will get us where we want to go. Whether you or your stats believe it or not.

Zod I miss posting. And GOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I do not think Cam is perfect and I think he has plenty of room for improvement, I just think our best chance at winning more this year is in improvements to defense and special teams.

Which is the exciting part about Cam. The room for growth. 8 more games this year, with a full off-season, and he should be even better down the road.

IMO, our D and ST play is not going to improve any time in the near future. No amount of scheming can cover for a lact of talent. We ARE improving, and will continue to improve. But until we have depth, we will be fighting for everything we get. It is still exciting, just frustrating.

My giddy is not the only thing on the rise. And GOOOO CATS!!!!!!!!!!!!

Carolina Panthers. Tied for 8th. Doing a half ass jobs at checking numbers just confuses you. We average more per game than some of those teams we are tied with, because some have played more games.

You just fill this place with crap and numbers you have no idea how to use or what they mean.

You are beginning to sound more and more like a total fraud. Please stop using numbers. You make up your own rules and then spread the garbage around. Ypp is by definition scoring efficiency. Look on the side bar. See scoring efficiency. That's what it means.

Carolina's offense is NOT efficient no matter how bad you want it to be. It's 21st in the league and it gets worse when you consider the fact we have played the worst defenses in the league this year.

So what you are saying is you can't account for the real life current example I just gave you. Got it  Thanks for playing!

I did. I accounted for all of them and the most important one.

All top 10 offenses ranked in the top 10 in scoring efficiency have winning records. REAL LIFE. WINNING. It's what still matters to some Carolina Panthers and other NFL fans.

WINNING.

So. You can't account for why Cincy's offense is not very efficient yet has a really high YPP. Got it  Thanks for playing!!

Teams with a high YPP usually are successful. That is because it encompasses more than just offense or defense.

I have not read this entire thread and I will not. I do not like to see people use a one or two statistics to try to fit their narrative. You start to sound like gameday announcers and ESPN pundits.

http://footballoutsiders.com/stats/drivestats

Thru week 9.

Carolina Offense: (ranking, lower is better)

Yds/Dr - 37.68 (7)

Pts/Dr - 2.19 (6)

TDs/Dr - .247 (6)

TOs/Dr - .141 (7)

Carolina Defense:

Yds/Dr - 36.47 (30)

Pts/Dr - 2.38 (31)

TDs/Dr - .269 (31)

TOs/Dr - .103 (27)

These are not all of the stats available, just some.

From a glance, our offense IS EFFICIENT. We are in the top 25% in scoring when we have the ball, moving the ball, and scoring TDs. And we are NOT turnover prone. Panthers are avg at Punts/DR.

Our Defense is one of the worst in the league at creating Turnovers

Pack, Bucs & Pats are nearly as bad(or worse) as the Panthers when looking at Yds/Dr, Pts/Dr, TDs/Dr. Now look at TOs/Dr:

Bucs - .165 (8)

Pack - .216 (1)

Pats - .151 (13)

Our Defense can't get our Offense more possessions like these teams. So the offense has less margin of error.

And just so we can have another Dalton vs Newton debate.

Bengals OFF

Yds/Dr - 25.56 (28)

Pts/Dr - 1.72 (20)

TDs/Dr - .175 (23)

TOs/Dr - .072 (2)

Bengals DEF

Yds/Dr - 23.18 (2)

Pts/Dr - 1.35 (4)

TDs/Dr - .141 (4)

TOs/Dr - .121 (17)

At this point in the season the Panthers D give up over 1pt more per drive than the Bengals D.
