Mike Mayock Talks Cam Newton

Actually, I don't see it as an admission in any way that he was wrong. In fact, it's just the opposite. Mayock has been very consistent on Cam. He has always said he doesn't question Cam's physical ability, but he just isn't sold that Cam will put in whatever it takes to meet his great potential. So now, while he is saying that he is very impressed by everything Cam has done (and I'm reading that he's talking as much about the work that he's put in as much as his performance), he wants to see it continue over the long haul.

So basically he is saying no matter what happens he can't be wrong. If Cam fails, he didn't put in effort, if he succeeds he did what Mayock suggested and put in the effort.

Listened to Madden talk about Cam on Wednesday and how impressed he was. Thought the rookie QBs had no chance this year. He doesn't know of many QB's on 3rd and 14 can throw it for 17 yards in the air in get a first down. Your regular QB has to rely on the underneath throw and hope for a YAC first. But Cam can zip it right over/through the coverage and pick it up with his arm. Only a handful of guys in the league can do that.

I say it from the beginning...These media folks picked which QB they wanted to back...Blaine..in this year's draft. They saw that he wasn't that strong of a QB. So to level the playing field, they had to make the other rookie QBs appear weaker. I ranked Cam, Mallet, jake, Ponder, and Dalton ahead of Blaine. And, I also felt that these QBs true talents were being undermined by folks like Mayock, Charlie, and Mcshay because they all seem to have some kind of investment in pushing Blaine. How much u want to bet that the 2012 class of QBs will be the "best ever" if Luck is part of the class.

And where did he draw his conclusion of what type of QB Cam would be in the future....from a silly entertainment/Icon misquote...from what his father allegedly did or didn't do...or from what Cam supposedly did in UF??? And would Mayock's concern be the same if Andrew Luck was in a simliar situation or does Mayock feel that the Andrew Lucks of the world don't get in any trouble or have folks accuse them of things because they are too "intelligent" for that?

As self-righteous as Mayock is, I seriously wonder why he didn't make it as a NFL QB since he seem to have such high standards for others?

But comparing him to Jamarcus was such an easy road to travel...why not take it. I wonder why they aren't concerned that Luck, Blaine or any of the white QBs might become another Ryan Leaf? hmmmm Did Jamarcus get in trouble in college when he was 18?

I didn't recall Mayock saying he thought Newton would turn into Russell but maybe I missed it.

He did compare Bradford's pro-day to Russells. he did the same for Gabbert. he may have done the same for cam too, not sure. His point there was how pro days don't tell you much about the prospect.

Also, Mayock is not a liar. His last mock had him placing Cam with us, and he had Cam as his #2 QB on his last big board. He even said he thought Cam would be better than Gabbert *if* cam put in the effort, even if Gabbert also did. Aka, he thought Cam could be better.

No, he's saying that it has always been about how much Cam was willing to put into being a great QB. Basically he's said all along that Cam has enough talent and ability that if he puts in the work, there is no reason he should fail...which isn't the case with all college players. But after some questionable choices, he just wasn't sure about Cam's dedication and where his focus would be. So it's not about him being right, but about what would make the difference between Cam being great and falling into obscurity.

Mayock never drew a conclusion about what type of QB Cam would be. He only talked about what type of QB Cam could be. And basically that Cam would decide that by how hard he worked for it. In fact, he consistently said that if Cam worked hard, he felt he has all to tools to be a great QB. The only real negative he had about Cam was whether or not he would do what it took once he got paid, never about his ability as a QB.

To Mayock's credit, he has said from the beginning that Cam would be great if he loved the game enough to work at it. What bothers me though, is that there was never one shred of evidence that Cam didn't love the game or wasn't willing to work hard. A lot of analysts and fans just assumed that he had the same attitude as JaMarcus Russell, with no evidence to back it up.

Nothing direct, but there were red flags. Cheating is a prime example of someone taking a shortcut to achieve their goal, and there's really been no denying that Cam cheated on tests at Florida (not even by Cam himself...in fact, Rivera even alluded to it by saying that Cam realizes he has made some mistakes in the past, but that he has learned from them). So because most accept that Cam did cheat at Florida, it's logical that some people would worry about whether or not that is a character flaw or was just a mistake. Fans of his blow it off saying it was only a simple mistake, while others say Cam needs to prove that it was mistake and not a sign of deeper issues. It really just comes down to perspective, and Mayock obviously fell into the category of it needing to be proven.

Also, when you combine that with some of the other reported transgressions, it's no wonder that some were less than sold on Cam's dedication. Really, it came down to how much you believed all the reports and whether or not you thought they were a big deal. But there was legitimate reason for concern. Fortunately, the Panthers were in a position to vet him like no analyst could, and came away satisfied. And thus far, he has proven the team right.

Andrew Luck is probably the most over-talked and over-hyped player that will ever come out of college football.

I would love for nothing more than he came out and pulled a Jamarcus Russel or even better, a Ryan Leaf. I hate Cowards. Argue with me if u want about him "doing the right and commendable" thing by staying in school. If you're a fan if this team and organization... Then there's no possible way you could ever pull for him IMO

Unless of course, you thank him for having Cam... Which if that's the case I'm FIRST in line!

I get down and kiss the ground where he walks, for giving us Cam Newton, the greatest QB to ever grace the NFL!!! And he's OURS !!!!

All of this is just more proof that as a black qb (or black anything for that matter) you have the deck stacked against you and have to work extra hard to prove you belong. That's exactly what my first Staff Sergeant told me after I finished School of Infantry and hit the fleet.....you have to prove that you are not "one of Those black guys". Anyone who thinks otherwise is delusional.

Pete Prisco from cbs is also coming out and saying that he had newton at 2 behind ponder........lot of people trying to take it back and be on the safe side...lol

Whenever I want to laugh my a$$ off I go back and look at what people were actually saying about Cam before the draft.
