No to France, check amsterdams new laws concerning cannabis I think it's no longer allowed for tourists

I recommend Barcelona but then again I'm biased

Definitely do it, so worth it.

You won't need a visa because you won't be there for the allotted amount of time (I think 4 months)

England. I was in France for a day, but my host family was constantly saying how the French are some of the unfriendliest Europeans to foreigners and how their cities smell of urine.

Maybe that's just their opinion but still, I'm sure others had good experiences there.

France doesn't deserve that reputation. Paris was one of the cleanest cities I've seen.

You just have to be very aware of pickpockets and camera/phone snatchers.

Barcelona in December? No way. The coast is beautiful, but its dead after October.

Amsterdam was too expensive for my tastes. When I went, it was a family trip, so I had none of the stuff Amsterdam is famous for...

To clarify my earlier post about discounts at train stations...

Many of them have weekend regional passes that you can get for somewhere around 20-50 euro. They're good for the whole weekend as long as you're on a regional train (you have to pay attention to the numbers on the cars - trains split up and go different directions - get on the right one). They'll give you a card and you might have to leave some car keys or something at the station. You have to give the card back when your traveling is done.

I'm not sure why someone would say European cities and countryside are poo. Must not have been to Europe.

Spent a bunch of time in Germany when one of my relatives lived there. I think i have been 4 times.

As far as France vs England I would pick Southern France. Skip Paris and tool around the countryside and do some wine tours. But December in London is not bad either as there are fewer tourists and you can get cheap theatre tickets if that is your thing. Or just f around in pubs.

But if it were me i would explore close to where you will be in Germany and add a few day trips in. If you are North then take a 3-4 hour train ride to Amsterdam one day. Prague could also be 3-4 hours and that is an amazing city

You cannot get into Europe without a Immigration Visa. But if you are a tourist, they just stamp the visa in your US Passport when you enter.
