Can't believe I missed this thread. The fields are gorgeous. I respect Boone, in fact I love it and I love app. But the city I live in is Charlotte and Charlotte needs and respectable football team even if it is JV. I suggest everyone have som niner pride if you live here. If you go up to boone ALL you see are app stickers. The city has to invest in this team and this team will give back to the city (like app has to Boone). So buy a tshirt or go to a game or something.

I am on campus a lot. I met a couple guys who are going to play, one is an ex marine tatted up probably a slot WR and the other is a young kid who is a square block pure muscle, a RB type. I have no doubt there are students who can play, I just hope the coaching is good.

It's be nice to see more Niner stickers in the city. You don't have to necessarily like them or the school but it's the biggest college in the city you live in and will only get bigger if it's supported. Plus niner gear looks really fuging good (maybe because green is my favorite color), don't like the arm logo too much though.

Academic buildings falling apart but hey at least we are building a football stadium. What a waste of money when there are so many more pressing needs.

People who say this are ignorant as hell.

A football program will bring more value to your degree and school in general far more than quality of academic buildings. It IS an investment in the quality of the school just not in an immediate, physical way, in a better way.

Some buildings are falling apart but the newer buildings are awesome. Chapel hill has some run down classrooms/buildings as well. APP is the same way just less than the two. It's just the way it goes that is an educational funding issue. UNCC had outside funding to have the team and that is a great thing.

App State and UNCC are so far apart, city wise, that they really shouldn't be compared.

Boone is very similar to Chapel Hill in the fact that the town is built around the school, therefore everyone in the town fully supports the school.

Charlotte is comparable to Raleigh in the fact that the school was built around the city, therefore you find that not everyone in the city supports the school. That's just one of the downsides of building a college in a large city and having a football team is not going to change it.

Field is coming along nicely. They've started pouring the seating and the field house is taking shape. Construction camera can be found here: http://oxblue.com/pro/open/rodgersbuilders/charlotte49ers

but you'll have to adjust it to a daytime hour.

The stadium will be done by fall and some practices will be open to the public.

We just signed 25 guys to scholarships including taking one away from App and two that had ECU offers. Not too bad for a start up I suppose.

Exactly. Having a football team won't do anything. The fans can change it.

I am not trying to compare the schools or location, simply the devotion of the fans. I find that in itself very cool.

Having a football team could help the fan devotion, but I believe you are going to have to fix the stigma that UNCC is a communter school first. This could be the catalyst to doing that, but in my experience with UNCC students, most seem to care more about UNC, Duke or NC State sports more than they do about their own school. That's going to be a very big hurdle to overcome.

The reality is it's that way for every NC school not named UNC, Duke, or State because of the history and tradition of those three schools when it comes to college basketball (throw Wake in there as well.) The only real anomalies are from ASU and ECU football which have each developed strong followings because of their success in college football, a sport which isn't ingrained into NC residents from birth like college basketball and the ACC.

This, but in all fairness its hard to let go of a team you have been rooting for since you were a kid. I'm a UNCC student and a fan of its athletics, especially since I have a sibling that competes for one of the teams, but I've been a die hard Duke fan for most of my life and I refuse to give that up. I usually don't wear Duke gear other than playing b-ball or something tho. 1. I don't wanna be one of those people around campus and I wanna show off my 49er pride. 2. I'm not big on wearing that kinds stuff anyway.

and even for ASU and ECU you only see it for football.

Carolina and Duke are still who they cheer for for basketball. Even worse than at Charlotte actually because they're even worse at basketball than we are.

UNCC will never lose the sense of it being a commuter school. It is in a large city. ECU, App, State, Duke, Chapel hill are all located in a significantly smaller areas. The only reason to really go to these areas are for the schools. There are much more reasons to be in Charlotte, and for that reason UNCC is NOT a commuter school and never will be.

It can still become a school, with some dedicated sports fans. Being the largest school in the largest city in the carolinas it's really only a matter of time.

I can tell you there are far more people sporting gear at UNCC than there was ten years ago. Also their soccer team is having great success.
