Just tell the truth about Jake...you don't love him

Another question that needs to be answered....and be sure that I am not trying to be argumentative. I truly want to know. What makes a franchise QB?

Multiple years with the team?

Long term commitment with the team?

Started out with the team?

Drafted with the team?

Drafted in round one?

Playoff appearances?

Playoff wins?

Superbowl appearances/wins?

Is it a combination of things? What is it? Don't give examples. Tell what criteria is used to decide that they are a franchise QB.

Gatorade commercials...

But remember, we're looking at him with "last game played" goggles on...

You guys can do that all you want, it doesn't change the fact that he had a good season last year considering the circumstances. It doesn't change the fact he is our starting QB and team leader. Yea he had a bad game, all qb's have bad games and that just happens to sometimes happen in a playoff game. It's in the past get over the loss already, look forward to next season. We have a really good team, a great run game, our offense is really good. Top ten unit. The defense will get fixed just like the offense did last year.

We have a tough schedule, with some possibly great games in there. The team has the pieces to go 11- 5 or 10 -6 and make the playoff's next season.

You do know that I'm not doing it, just pointing out that a lot of Huddler's are, right?

seriously...i don't see what the draw is if that is the case.

if we had an offense built around our QB, would that ensure wins or superbowl wins anymore than having a stout defense and one of the best running games in th league?

Great post. It's really a team philosophy/team building question...and I pretty much agree with the Panthers PHILOSOPHY about it and their preference for what type of QB they like. The bigger issues are that they haven't been able to be successful with that whole great defense and run game part of the philosophy all in one season. In 2005, the run game was bad, the defense was probably good enough. This past year, the run game was all world, but the D was below average.

Pennington was first in Adjusted air yards per attempt, rivers was second, Ryan third and Delhomme was fourth.

In regular AYPA Delhomme was the leader. Ryan was second, Rivers was third and Rodgers was fourth.

Only one QB who started the majority of games had a less percentage in YAC yards from his receivers last year then Delhomme and that was Eli Manning.

39% and 38% respectively.

Sorry, I don't do all the adjusted stuff, just the raw numbers....

I wonder if the low amount of YAC is the type plays that we run, or if Jake is not on target/in step with the WR's?

The old adage that great offense gets you into the playoffs, but great defense wins championships applies...

I would venture to say running a WCO inflates QBs #s somewhat (Mr. Scot has long said this and I have read a bunch that backs him up), so does running a bunch of screens. Those lead to a bunch of YAC for WRs and/or RBs in the passing game. Heck the whole WCO leads to more yards for QBs since it relies a lot on YAC by receivers. Jake is...umm...not a lover of the short passing game as far as dumping it off to the RBs. THAT he needs to work on. And I would like to see more screens.

Oh and thanks for the link, cpan96...I wondered where you got those stats!!!

Agreed there.

The philosophy is valid. It has won 3 of the past 4 Superbowls (though Pitt didn't even need the running game that much in '08).

I'm gonna have to check out that site some too. Looks like good stuff.

Thanks CPF96.

It is, a lot of the stats there are geared towards overall team success. They show the stats and the correlation between the stats and successful teams. Like for example the Adjusted AYPA stat, pretty much all the QB's at the top of that list are from winning teams.

I've had that site bookmarked for a while. I'm not ashamed to admit that a lot of the stats in there goes over my head.

Still makes for good reading.
