Mock Draft Mania

I found this little tidbit on Coples from rantsports:

Can Be Used as a 4-3 Defensive Tackle: Quintin Coples played 12 games at defensive tackle due to the fact that Marvin Austin got suspended last season. Coples will move back to defensive end this season. Coples is 6 foot 6 285 pounds so its not unrealistic to see Coples end up being used as a 4-3 defensive tackle if he bulks up.

The Panther's currently sit 7th and that could be 9th after next week if both Denver and Seattle lose their next game. They are ranked higher because they have the highest SOS and that's what the draft uses first as a tiebreaker.

At that spot, they'll have a choice of Top tier OLB, CB, DT and probably either Jeffery or Blackmon.

you're getting too hung up on the whole "starter" thing

OT and WR are also reasonable needs, but upgrading corner isn't going to do anything if there's no rush in the QB's face, and they have like 9 seconds to throw. Coples also has experience in the interior.

Yea I'm getting hung up on the "starter" thing. I don't want to draft a guy that's gonna sit on the bench while the two better players are on the field, or a guy that's gonna put a player of Hardy's caliber on hte bench. We don't need an over-saturated DE group while other groups suffer from lack of investment. I, for one, also don't want a D-line that consists of Johnson, Hardy, Coples and whoever the only real DT we would play in that formation would be. That'd be the smallest 4 man D-line in modern NFL history. You can't function that small any more.

being 3 deep at the defensive end position is "over-saturated"

lol

Well then I guess the solution would be to match the offensive line pound for pound if weight is of such a high priority on the defensive line. The most recent measurement for your average offensive lineman I can find is about 312 lbs, So I guess we should just divide 1560 by 4, which means a front four needs to weigh an average of 390 lbs per lineman. <---- This is Jawnyblaze logic.

Ted Washington in his prime, Haloti Ngata, Vince Wilfork and B.J. Raji wouldn't come close to that mark. One of the best front fours in the NFL right now weighs an average of 286 lbs, which is 2 lbs less than the average weight of a line consisting of CJ/Hardy/Coples/Edwards or any NT we decide to pick up if we choose. Another high ranking starting DL currently weighs an average of 293 lbs.

Some esteemed NFL coaches such as Nick Saban for one were big on the whole "weight" thing as well. How did it work out there?

We're already more than 3 deep. Having 3 big time starter DEs when we currently only have 1 starter quality LB (2 next year when Beason returns), 1 starter quality CB (unless Hogan or Butler look to solidify that position) and 0 starter quality DTs means having 3 starter quality DEs would be over-saturated at the expense of the other positions.

I never said you have to match the weight of the o-line, you're discrediting your argument with such over simplification and mockery. You show me a 4-3 defensive line that is starting 3 DEs and one DT that is successful and I'll concede it's a possibility. I'll even go ahead and say now it's possible but highly unlikely. I'd rather stick with the tried and true formula in a 4-3, and that's two DTs, two DEs for the majority of plays. If we were to draft Coples, the best we could hope for with him, CJ and Hardy in is possibly a good D-line for passing situations only. I don't want our high first round pick spent on just improving a passing situation defensive package. Thought we learned our lesson with spending a 1st on Brown (and Goodson).

So, if they drafted Coples that means they wouldn't take steps to address the other holes on defense with the other draft picks they have or free agency? Because even drafting one of those other positions in the first round will not completely fix the defensive problems this team has, and there may not even be a player at LB, CB, or DT worth the pick as much as Coples is.

Exactly, Coples is far and away the best defensive player in the draft and he's a versatile player. People that think he wouldn't be better than Hardy are delusional and you can certainly have all 3 on the field at one time. He would allow everyone around him to be better too, let's not forget that Hardy's past is filled with injuries either.
