Pats cut CB Leigh Bodden

I disagree
that's fine.

another thing that bedard pointed out in his tweets...

GregABedard If anybody can point out a player Belichick has released either right before or during season and flourished elsewhere, I'm listening

GregABedard My point is, Belichick might not light world on fire drafting or FA, but evaluating his own talent...he's pretty darn good.

this isn't some scrub coaching staff that let him go. as much as i HATE to admit it, it's one of the best, maybe the best in the league if i was forced to pick one and be honest.

fwiw...an alternate thought comes from PFF who thinks he still has something to contribute:

Plenty left in the tank

You do wonder when guys come back from injury if they can come back and play to the level that we were accustomed to seeing from them. Bodden missed the entire 2010 season and so there was always going to be that question mark heading into the season. Well the former undrafted free agent has done a pretty good job of answering those questions through five appearances this year. 22 times he has been targeted in coverage, with just 12 completions allowed for 192 yards and one touchdown. Throw in the fact he’s broken up four passes and you’ve got a healthy stat sheet that is reflective of a performance that has earned him a +2.7 grade in his 169 snaps in coverage. Sure he hasn’t played like a Darrelle Revis clone, but then who has? The fact, for us, is that he’s been the best corner in a secondary short on players playing well, and short on bodies.

still thinking that something is wrong with him and that he's wearing down really early. pats wouldn't do this unless there was something wrong with him.

I'm not so sure that's as true as it used to be.

he and that team is on the decline and i think they only have a couple more years of being relevant, but for the most part he is still one of the best there is. he's got a while before i really question him in that department.

if bodden goes somewhere and makes a significant contribution somewhere, then i'll start to question him more. i just don't think he's reached that point, yet. i could be wrong, though.

Pats used to benefit from having one of the best pro and college scouting departments in the league. I've long harbored a suspicion that it was that more than the quality of the coaching that made them so good for so long. But they seem to be slipping there since losing both Pioli and Dimitroff.

That's one area I really wish the Panthers would concentrate more on, building a top flight scouting and talent evaluation staff.

could be, esp. with pioli.

we have gotten somewhat better in college scouting, imo, but as far as scouting the pros i think we've got a way to go. esp. on defense. not sure why that is such a weak spot.

rayzor, what do you think about the Pats cutting Butler then? I wouldn't say he's "flourished" here, but he's more than held his own.
he's done ok. i don't think he should be anymore than a nickel corner. he does pretty well covering the slot.

maybe they made a mistake in letting him go. i do expect more out of him then bodden, though. mainly because bodden is 30, he spent the '10 season on IR, and he's appearing to slow down as this season wears on.

i just don't trust it.

Football is a fickle thing...no pass rush = bad secondary

Carolina at least has two great edge rushers to hurry plays..

Bodden is an upgrade on Stanford and Thomas..savvy Vet with solid tackle skills.

Apparently with a veteran laden squad you have to make examples of other highly regarded vets. merriwether and his free lance headhunting..gone...Butler and the CB numbers game gone...Bodden and poor seconday make the example of the leader.

I don't think Butler was ever justifiably cut outside of the Patriots thinking they didn't need him because of one bad game.

Bill B. is gutting that secondary and almost unjustifiably so--their best CB is a really young guy. You have to surround the team with vets, because that's what used to make their defense run. Those guys are gone, and new leaders never stepped up. There is no Bruschi, Vrabel, Harrison, or Law anymore. No Milloy (and they even cut him in a rude way). There's just these new guys, and they're throwing them around.

Good. Thanks. Butler's been pretty cool and has helped this secondary out a lot so that Captain can stay in the slot. Gamble's reminding us all of why we wanted him to stay 3-4 years ago. When our LBs come back next year and the DT situation is fixed (with Edwards' return and whoever else we get), I think we'll have a top 12 defense again to go along with this top 5 offense.

It's happening, guys. We're building a Super Bowl team. This is no longer a John Fox era of mediocrity. I really feel like these young guys are all here for a purpose to continually build.
