Worrying about Cam leaving in 4 years

Happy Panther

Which was an unnecessary risk they took drafting a high pick QB. Rivers is not better than Brees as a QB. But there's no doubt that Sean Payton is a better coach than Norv Turner.

Can you blame them? 11 TDs, 15 INTs, and a 67 QB rating in his 2nd year as a starter? It was actually worse than his first year starting.

He was a 2nd round pick, we drafted a first round replacement for our dissapointing 2nd round pick after only 1 season :jc:

Actually, LT's best year was 2006... but still... he was running hard, so you have a point.

This just ties back to my point about their front office and coaching being dumb. If they can't get their act together to at least MAKE it to the Super Bowl with Drew Brees and LT when he was a Touchdown machine, there is something horribly wrong with the management and coaching of the team.

Again, Drew Brees wasn't as good then as he is now. They also didn't have the offensive weapons they have now in NO (and have now in SD when they are healthy). And there's no argument that SD's coaching is pretty crappy and has been for a long time.

No argument from me there... but there was no way in hell that they knew 100% that Rivers would be the better QB in the same system. And as it's becoming evident they were wrong.

So it looked like a toss up for 5 years but now after a few bad games it's all clear that Brees is far superior? They also didn't know 100% that Drew Brees wouldn't come back with Chad Pennington's arm.

Cam has a 4 year contract with a team option 5th year. Obviously the Panthers would accept that option. Then they would be able to franchise him the next 2 years. So Cam will be here for a minimum of 7 years. There is nothing to worry about.. Cam will be here for his entire career.

Wait... are you comparing Clausen to Brees?

You do realize, that Jimmy had THREE... THREE TDs all last year right? In ten games.

:jc: indeed.

Then why are you arguing? That's been my point the whole time.

Are you really trying to say Rivers is a better QB than Brees? If so, then

Actually, I'd say it's more to do with a Saint's Super Bowl ring Brees carries than Rivers' bad games this year. Or maybe you missed that phenominal Madden-esque game he had against Indy last Sunday? He did that once with San Diego too btw. 2004, week 8, against Oak... 22/25, 281 yrds 5 TDs 0 Ints... 153.1 Passer Rating. He actually had multiple games with 140+ passer rating that year.

Seriously, you don't put up numbers like that and get a pooty 2 Million Dollar Contract a year later. Lame.

BTW... the season is almost halfway over. Rivers is going to have to do a 180 to prove his critics wrong.

Cam always looks really pissed when he loses. There are a ton of guys in the NFL that just go through the motions and don't give a sh*t but I don't think Cam is one of those guys. If he continues his stellar play yet we continue to be a sub .500 team year in and year out I won't be surprised to see him bolt, regardless of what massive contract we throw at him.

The good thing is we can basically force him to stay here for 7 years. Though he'll only be 29 at that point and most likely still have several good years left ahead of him.

Bottom line is we can't expect this guy to do EVERYTHING. He's not going to fix special teams or start playing defense. We can't keep trotting out teams filled with waiver wire scrubs and expecting to compete with the Packers and Steelers of the world. Seven years from now if we still haven't gotten our sh*t together, brought in a FO capable of building a team capable of challenging for a title every year then no, I won't be at all surprised to see him pull a Lebron, nor would I blame him.

I am actually comparing them. Are you trying to say that Brees did anything to inspire confidence in his future abilities based on his first 3 years in the league, 2 years starting? They had the #1 overall pick for a reason.

Then why are you arguing? That's been my point the whole time.

You said they made a mistake releasing Brees, I'm saying they suck at game planning, getting a team ready to play to start the season, and making halftime adjustments.

And yeah, I'm saying that until this year Rivers has been as good as Brees, and will be again in the future.

Superbowls aren't the best way to judge quarterbacks, they never have been. Why don't people judge MLB's (the QB of the defense) based on superbowl wins?

What critics does Rivers have these days? Are people still wondering whether he's a great QB? He's played 6 games and he hasn't been bad in all of them anyway.

Superbowls are the way we judge teams and QBs whether it is right or wrong. It is the difference between a HoF nomination and none. Wins matter in this league and Superbowl win matters most.

And we do judge MLBs on superbowls as well just not as much since QBs are the true drivers of the team.

QBs leave because they are unhappy with ownership, are on a loser team, or have a bad attitude.

Players have typically liked playing for Jerry and Cam has a great attitude.

If we continue to improve then there is no issue.

I honestly do not think we have anything to worry about. Think about it, Cam is playing amazing for a rookie. He is only going to get better with time. The quarterback position is the most important on the team. If he is playing lights out superstar mode then we will be winning anyway and he will be happy.

Look at teams like the Saints, Patriots and Colts. Yea they have afew big names here and there but the quarterback is what takes those teams to a whole new level. Look at the Colts without their Franchise QB this year.

Cam will always have good players around him. We have always had good players but imo just didn't have a good signal caller.

I would stop worrying about him leaving and pray to whatever god you believe in that he stays healthy. I think that is far more relevant at this point.

Be happy fellow Panther fans, we finally have the most important piece to bringing a Lombardi home.
