Cam Newton Erases All Doubt

That's nice but the D wasn't on the field during those winning 4th quarter drives. It was the offense. They were both in the same situations: in the 4th quarter with the ball and a chance to comeback and win or tie. Has nothing to do with D. It has everything to do with your O successfully marching down the field and getting the win.

No way around it unless you pray for a safety or a number of safeties.

hmmm...Bills?

Its nice when your D can contribute. That was the point.

Yeah it does. Stop making excuses. Cam and the offense had an opportunity to put it away or go for the lead every game we lost and we didn't.

Don't ignore the importance of your QB play, leadership and offense, especially when it comes to 2 minute drills. This is vital to winning in the NFL and you know it.

Newton's two minute drill needs work. That I'll give you (not really unusual for a rookie).

The knocks on leadership and QB play? Those I don't get

Newton's ball placement has improved a fair amount from week one (likely due to building more chemistry with his receivers) and his pocket presence took a huge leap in the Chicago game when he finally stopped the back foot and jumping throws.

As far as leadership, that's judged best by how well teammates follow you. We've seen pretty much nothing but positives on that front.

No, he's not perfect, but he's a heck of a lot further along in his development than anyone should have a right to expect, especially given the way this past offseason played out.

The future looks extremely bright.

I didn't mean leadership in a general sense. Everyone can see Cam leads like a veteran. I'm talking about 4th quarter specifically....when the game's on the line. Keeping your cool, focus and composure to win the game. And no one's debating QB play in the sense that you are talking about(i.e. ball placement, pocket presence, none of that). Strictly referring to playing under pressure with time running out for the comeback win or to put the game away and not make mistakes(i.e. 2 minute O, clock management, calling time outs when you need to, spiking the ball if you have to,). It's about elevating your game when the pressure is at its highest at the end.

So you watch those games we lost and go "Well he just panicked and choked on those 4th quarter drives." because I don't. I watch them and go, wow, if he can figure out the red zone then he'll be able to put up touchdowns instead of field goals and win most games. Most young quarterbacks struggle down there. A lot of the plays we call down there are things like quarterback draws anyway. Not exactly stuff where he is missing reads out of panic. They mostly come down to what gaps did the defense blitz.

Besides it's laughable to think that someone with one game winning drive his rookie year is still a big question mark and someone with two has put to rest all doubts. Joey Harrington lead 3 game winning drives in his rookie season, so he must be even more clutch than the great Andy Dalton.

I'd say he is elevating his game there, but it's a transition.

In the first few weeks, Newton's level of play took a noticeable dip late in the game. Again, not unusual for a rookie playing against pros for the first time. When you saw him in the latter part of games back then, he looked worn out, like he'd been through the ringer (and technically, he had).

Over the last few games though, that drop off has lessened significantly. It may show up again late in the season when the proverbial "rookie wall" hits, but by next season that'll no longer be a concern.

Next season, when a lot of the "rookie" stuff falls away, I fully expect Newton to become one of the most feared opponents in the league (heck, some of that hype is building already).

i would like to see them run the 2 minute drill more just to get him some reps with it.

what i would love most is if the panthers tried to use the tempo that malzahn did in auburn. their offense was a 2 minute drill from start to finish. newton seemed to thrive in it and it flat wore out defenses.

Given the coaching staff's "attack" mentality, it wouldn't suprise me at all to see that sort if thing once he's had more time to master the system.

yeah, they talked about making the defense respond to them rather than responding to what the defense was giving them. running a no huddle 2 minute drill on every position would sure make that happen.
