Cam Newton Changing the way the quarterback position is played.

I don't know that his skill set is as unique as people think. We've had guys like Steve Young, John Elway and others that were just as good a running threat as Newton (honestly, Steve Young was probably a more dangerous runner).

But accepting that notion, it's odd when people posit that one unique player will "change the game". Look at what Peyton Manning can do. That would certainly be 'game changing"...if there were a bunch more Peyton's out there on the horizon.

Reality: There might be one, and it took over 20 years for that one to show up.

How long before another player like Newton shows up?

i get what you're saying about dual threat QBs, but Steve Young, Vick etc weren't as big or bigger than 7-8 of the defensive players that they were lining up against....while also having 4.5 speed.

before the draft, there were so many talking heads saying that Cam's game didn't translate to the NFL, he wouldn't be able to run like he did in college, etc. the reality is that he's going to be the nightmare for DCs that Vick was supposed to be. if they stack the box, he has the arm to make teams pay. drop 7-8 into zone coverage and he'll move the chains with his legs with 15-20 yard runs.

i think that he'd prefer to be seen as a "traditional" drop back passer but at the same time, he'll do whatever he needs to do to move the chains or get into the end zone.

that's not what anyone's trying to say but keep reaching.

on a side note,i wish that someone would move the pie button a little farther away from the quote button......or that there was a way to take it back when you give it to someone by mistake.

Tom Brady is screwed. He's going to have to learn how to run the ball to be successful in the NFL.

 there are two buttons between Quote and Pi

You have suspect accuracy sir.

If he's browsing on his phone, the buttons are easy to mash with fat thumbs. Haha. I accidentally pie tons of posts that are the last on a page, as pie is dangerously close to the next page button. But I like that you can't unpie someone. Haha.

My big concerns pre-draft were his accuracy, the adjustment coming from a spread system and whether he'd be able to absorb the punishment of big NFL hits when he was getting up slow just being hit be college players.

So far, he's been able to adjust fine and he isn't taking that many big hits because he's passing more than he's running (and getting the ball out).

Once the word was that he was starting, I was afraid he'd develop bad habits from playing on a bad team. And early on, he was starting to do just that (off his back foot, jumping throws, phantom pressure, etc) but he took a big step forward in the Chicago game and those things haven't shown up since.

Shula and Chudzinski are doing a great job developing him, and it's nice to be able to say that about coaches on a Panthers staff :)

my biggest concerns were his habit of throwing off of his back foot and the fact that he only had 14 college starts under his belt when he left Auburn. but as someone that watched ever snap that he played last year, it was hard to read some of the stuff that people like Nolan Narwocki and Charley Casserly were saying about him without wondering where they were coming up with the crap that they were spewing about him.

They get their source from the same place a lot of other analysts do, from scouts.

It's not quite the double-edged sword that getting info from agents is, but scouts whiff sometimes, in both directions (Ryan Leaf, Tom Brady, etc)

I have a theory on where the whole "fake smile" notion came from, but I think I'll save that for later.
