I'm not sure if this has been posted. Didn't see I link. I believe this is the espn 32 video that's been missing.

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcsouth/post/_/id/26703/nfl32-what-did-learn-about-young-qbs

A few of us were discussing the posibility of cam changing the way the game was played even before he was drafted. Many of the talking heads around the huddle said this wasn't possible. after seeing what we've seen so far what say you???

SN: I don't know how to embed the video so if someone who does can do that it would help.

Ugh :nonod:

There's always some writer or analyst who throws out the whole tired "changing the game" line, and they're just about always referencing a black quarterback.

News Flash: I'm pretty sure the game has seen quarterbacks who can both run and pass before. And they haven't all been white either.

I'd add that for the "game to be changed" as the theory goes, you'd need about a dozen more quarterbacks on the horizon that have Newton's combination of size, running and passing ability. How many can you name that fit that description?

Newton is a great quarterback, but he's not "changing the game". He's playing the game at a very high level, same as guys like Brett Favre, John Elway, Steve McNair and others did before him.

That's enough for me. I don't need the "game to be changed". I just need the guy who plays quarterback for us to be good at the game as it is.

i dont know about all that but i guarantee you the saints, falcons, and bucs are going to change their drafting strategies based on trying to stop cam newton. he has changed our division for years to come.

That I'll give you.

And that means way more to me than supposedly "changing the game".

Mike Vick was supposed to change the way QBs played the game.

Cam takes dumps that are tougher than Vick.

What Vick was supposed to do was usher in an era of running quarterbacks.

He didn't, and neither will Newton, but for different reasons.

Vick didn't change the game because he wasn't a good enough passer to be considered a true dual threat. Newton won't change it because, like the others mentioned above, he's a passer first. The running ability is just an added weapon, same as it is for guys like Aaron Rodgers.

I'm not even sure why people compare Newton to Vick. They really don't have that much in common.

There has never been a QB with his COMBINED skill set speed and power, big arm and he has been accurate. Swag Newton is special.

Like he said in the interview pre draft with Primetime he's a little bit of Vick, a little bit of Big Ben/Brady etc. Which makes his potential off the charts along with his work ethic to want to be one of the great's at QB.

Dilfer's not saying that teams will be looking for Newton-lites in the draft (although I'm sure some will take gambles in hopes they can find someone even remotely like him) but that Cam is demonstrating that supremely athletic quarterbacks actually can thrive as pocket passers if they have the drive and mental makeup that desires to do so.

And frankly, there have been athletic QBs even in recent years that showed those abilities, but it wasn't often that the most physically gifted player on the team was the quarterback.

He thinks Cam will help remove the stigma regarding the physicality of a player meaning that the player would not be mentally tough or astute enough to excel at the position. The game-changing aspect may be that future players see that Cam can be both a physical force and thrive in the traditional role of a quarterback, and desire to be quarterbacks rather than receivers or tight ends.

I think its a valid arguement that dilfer is making. He could change the way people view how quarterback is played. Simply by allowing the young kids a early age who are the biggest strongest athletes on a team to become the quarterback. If that happens i think you might see more cam type players enter the college ranks, there for leading to potentially more in the NFL.

I know alot of you don't see it as possible I think it's already happening. The early success and affect of cam newton on the NFL could be felt as early as next year. With all the talk of Luck, jones, and barkley i exspect a Cam like talent RG3(robbert griffin III) to also rise up draft boards. He doesn't have much experince but, newton is proving that might not be as big of a factor as it use to be.

Don't be suprised if Griffin slides ahead of one of the big three just because of Newton. Accept the "Newton effect".

Good points.

    • In my dream, we somehow luck into a top 2 pick and someone wants a QB bad and doesn’t want anyone else to jump them. Somehow we’ll probably screw up the picks anyway, but it would be nice to do even partially what Chicago did to us. We’d have to lose out, which is a decent possibility unless Tampa is resting. We need Atlanta to stay within a game because Atlanta beat Tampa twice. The rest of the draft slots are who knows because Jax plays the Raiders and then Tennessee and you never know who will rest starters. I think we are top 7 unless we somehow pull out 2 more wins. The 4 win teams have higher SOS and there is only one 5 win team with the same SOS. If we win 1 of 3, we still should stay in top 7. If we lose out and the Jax games work for us, we can easily be top 3.
    • The whole team played poorly.  This seemed more like a team that wasn't prepared.
    • Easy, tiger. Show us on the doll where the bad man from Texas touched you lol. Kidding. Are you a Sooners fan or something? Texas seems like one of the last colleges to hate.
