Discussion Cam Newton on ESPN First Take: Cam or Vick?

Jemele Hill makes me want to vomit.

I just can't get over the fact that she is still on TV daily and yet Hank Williams Jr. had his gig pulled for his comment.

She said "Rooting for the Celtics is like saying Hitler was a victim. It's like hoping Gorbachev would get to the blinking red button before Reagan."

From this poorly written article and it was edited out after having already been published: http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=hill/080614

And I hate Boston and the Celtics too, but what gives ESPN? They just ignore that this ever happened. Sorry to bring that up, but the rage took hold of me! :D

Cam and Vick really aren't good comparisons imo... Vick started out as almost a purely running QB. Yeah, he had a strong arm, but was never very accurate and would break out and run as his first means of escape... it wasn't until his comeback that he tried to become more of a pocket passer.

Cam from day one has been a pocket passer that only runs when he's forced to... Cam is super tall and has a very upright throwing motion, while Vick is much shorter and has a more side-armed delivery. Vick is dangerous, but is more apt to get hurt because of his style of play and smaller stature.

It's not much of a comparison imo at all.

BTW, I would take Cam any day of the week over the old or new Vick... and Vick is my primary fantasy QB.

Cam is a better pocket passer than Vick ever was or ever will be.

If you read the comments below any national Cam Newton article, the ignorant masses think Cam is the same as Vick though. What a shame....Cam has been a pocket passer from the get go, but most of the country is ignoring that little nugget.

Cam is doing stuff as a rookie that Vick still has not mastered.

Cam does not have Vick's speed, but he's not far behind and he's a much bigger body so he can absorb the punishment that comes with being a mobile QB much better than Vick.

Is this even a serious question? Oh wait... it's ESPN First Take.

Pretty much.

Newton's field vision is almost like radar (helps when you're tall enough to actually see over your linemen) and high delivery from a taller quarterback means fewer batted passes, almost none this year as opposed to last year.

Said before that Newton's foot speed is way closer to Daunte Culpepper's than Vick's, but being that big means each step covers a lot of ground. And give him credit. He's no Devin Hester but for a big man, he's pretty elusive.

Newton can run, but he can also pass. Even at his best, Vick isn't anywhere near the passer that Newton is (and this is only his rookie year).

I'm like you. This isn't even a debate to me.

I think that this fact in particular is one of the major keys to his success... he's so tall and releases the ball so high, it's a HUGE advantage.

Buddy of mine and I were discussing that watching him jump for the end zone.

When he lays out like he did, he's nearly three yards long.

I agree on the Culpepper footspeed.....but his elusiveness and agility is on a level Culpepper never could dream of
