How about you consider something else.

Due to our poor coverage he is forced/being asked to kick for maximum hang time to ensure our gunners are near the returner. It's no secret our special teams were giving up huge chunks of yardage, so it might actually be a more conscious attempt to not out kick our coverage team. To back this argument up, Baker has a second best in the league of just 29.2% of punts returned.

The other thing you need to consider is that before the Washington game, he had only had 24 punts, two of which were returned for TD's. Of his 170 yards he had given up, 158 came from those two. Whilst you can't ignore these returns, from a statistical standpoint, those two are anomalies which grossly affect the averages.

Your first question is intriguing to me. It would be great to know his average hangtime, that would answer a lot of questions.

Also, Stats show that Baker has given up 166 return yards to punt returners, which puts him at #13 in the league (about average), while those 2 punt return TDs made an impact on his averages, I don't think it's any different then what's happening to the rest of the league according to the stats.

stats are a joke already but now we have a thread about punting stats

most likely the most subjective state imaginable

snap, field position, wind, temperature, protection, endzone, etc.

lmao at this

You don't think stats tell a story?

Because TD runs happen 1-2 per team per season, having two in just 24 punts is completely statistically flawed. You simply can't say that "on average he's in the middle and this backs up my argument". The fact is, all but those two punts have resulted in fair catches, negative yards or very small gains. Whilst these two would not affect his average, it will significantly affect his net average. The punters you are comparing him to, have up to twice as many punts, which averages out the anomalies at both ends of the spectrum.

I hate this example but - If you factor out those two (which the other punters will give up at some point in the season), he has a net average of 43, which would be third in the league. If you are going to take an average of yards, you also need to consider where he sits in average amount of punts, which he is in the bottom 1/4. Unfortunately you claimed that simply because he sat at #13 you can't consider these two punts as statistically significant, however when looking at his data without them, it clearly is making an impact.

Regarding his hang time, he currently has an average of 5.2 seconds which is tied 13th and 0.4 seconds behind the top dog. Now before you say that that means he is average, you need to consider the relative distance travelled. Only Matt Turk and Matt Bosher have the same or better hang time AND a lower average. Baker has the third lowest yards per second conversion in the NFL, which means he is producing more hang time per each yard that all but three guys in the league. Even more telling is that, despite the other two statistically being better, they have more punts returned than Baker...

How can he have a net average of 43 yards when his punt average is only 40 yards? His net average can't be higher than his punt average..

IS it? I thought he had one of the biggest legs in the league.

The coach won't allow him to attempt anything over 52 yards because his leg is not strong enough. He fell short on his only 50+ yard kick of the season already, but it was dead on accurate. Have you never wondered why we always punt on 53yd field goal attempts?

OK. This is curious because the articles I read when he signed made it seem like he has a huge leg.

Also i didn't realize he already had a house in Mooresville when he signed here.

Not analytically.

I don't look at it analytically either.

he's struggled to kick it out of the endzone with the new kickoff location....I could be wrong but I can only think of a couple times he's been able to. That's not up here with the strongest legs in the league.

He had the most punts (95) last year and he averaged 43 yards. That ranked him at 20th in the league, but using rankings with punters is fuging stupid because four yards separates him from the top punter. Add 1.5 yards to his average and he's top ten.
