Byron Bell

I'd rather him give up a wide open sack than get manhandled and beaten for a sack at this point. When he gives one up untouched it means he just didn't know the play called, which will come in time. If he continuously got beat because he simply could not defend against his rusher, that would cause more concern for me. Most of his negative plays have been temporary boneheadedness, which again, can be remedied in time I think.

He got burnt twice in the first half. One he had to grab the guys facemask and the other he held the guy like crazy. Those were not miscommunication problems. Those were lack of ability. Right now, he is the weakest link on the o-line. The Panthers have to run to the left all game and have to leave an extra blocker in to protect him. This is why you are seeing more of the fullback and the tightend staying in to block more.

Again, I think most of his issues are miscommunications and mental lapses. Not all. I realize he is the weakest link but when the other guys on the line have a total of like 5 pro bowls and 800 years experience, it's to be expected.

Personally I'm on the fence. He is a rookie and an undrafted one at that, so it's not like we can expect him to be THAT good right away. Considering that, I think he's been solid and has shown the potential to be at least an average starter at RT, but probably not much better than average.

Ideally we'd draft a RT in the 1st/2nd and use Bell as our long-term backup. The wild card here is Otah. If they're serious about giving him another shot in his contract year then it's likely we won't even bother to address RT in the early rounds and rely on Bell as Otah's backup if/when he gets hurt.

Thing is, there's a good chance we'll have a shot to draft a pretty good OT prospect in either the 1st or 2nd as it's a very deep position in this draft class. It's going to be tough to pass on a guy who has that kind of ability because we have Byron Bell on the roster.

Comparing him to naanee is stupid, nannee is in his 5th year.

Sorry to break it to the experts but Bell is a rookie and it is way to early to tell after his second/third NFL game.

If you guys are going to sit around waiting for another Otah, wake up.

I keep forgetting Bell is a UDFA rookie who is a recent signing. He is going to be huge for this team in the long run, even if just as a capable backup. You better believe he could switch to guard and maul people.

Why should I believe that ?

Yes, he can definitely improve. But to say he's playing fine now is just laughable. The Panthers have had to change their whole offensive game plan because of him. They are more often than not having to leave a RB or TE in to block on his side and they aren't running to his side unless they are pulling a lineman from the left side.
