Gantt: Delhomme here to stay

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

don't take everything so literal. People are saying that Jake is fairly partial to zeroed in on one WR in most cases and has never shown a proficiency for checking down from coverage when his guy is concerned.

Somehow, I missed the phrase "fairly partial" before. Maybe because it wasn't there?

Really, Jake was no different in 04...he just threw it to Moose most of the time instead of Smitty. I don't know why that's such a bad thing anyway. Usually the #1 WR is gonna catch the most balls on any team....that's why he's the #1 guy in the first place.

that is true

Scot tried to bring this talking point in to skew the original point which is that jake targets smitty too much and cannot deviate from him effectively and also ends up throwing balls he never should through toward 89.

Randy was also open and/or had an obvious advantage, they had little to no running game and Tom B. is just a little bit better of a QB that Joke Delhomme.

Also, Tom B. does not have a long history of doing that. When he did it it helped the team. he has proven to be a very good QB who can read the defense and make the smart play for many years with average receivers. Not so for Jake. Jake has lived off of prayer that Smith has made outstanding plays on and smoke routes that Smith has taken to the house.

That tandem had an advantage over every DB scheme in the league

jake and Smith do not...mainly because of jake

I've done proved that to be false, he hasn't lived off of smoke routes and such, you have an argument on the long throws though. The smoke routes however have little significance on Jake's overall numbers. Considering he had the fewest YAC yards for any qb last year that started all 16 games and lead the league in AYPA. I also think that Jake has proven that he can indeed throw a pretty good long ball. Yea smith makes some amazing catches, but some of those throws he caught were 50 yard throws with no yac.

fairly partial to zeroed in is the range Jake stays in when targeting Smitty.

and he should but he needs to check down and not force so many balls and I have said that for years and will probably continue to say it as long a Joke is the Qb.

that tells me he ain't getting any better

last year I agree..it no longer works. the year before or two years ago they milked it all season.

sure he made som great throws-ahem-heaves down field. I recall very few that did not require a fantastic effort on Steve's part though. Those two game winner againts GREEN Bay were horrible decisions both.

Really? Because this is what I was responding to...

Jake drops back, looks at Smith, he's not open, waits, looks at Smith, he's not open, waits more, looks at Smith, Smith now has 2 people on him cause Jake's been lazor eye beaming him since the snap, what does he do? He throws the ball into double/triple coverage while Moose or a RB is open for a 5-10 yard pass. That's Jake in a nutshell.

That's a far cry from saying that the man is fairly partial to one WR.

As for throwing to Smitty so much, he gets the average amount of target percentage for a number one WR in the NFL. Moose gets the average target percentage for a number 2 in the NFL as well. Smitty only gets around 36 - 38 percent of the overall attempts which just happens to be right around league average for the Number 1 wr.

That's just crazy! Everybody knows that Jake locks on to Smitty 95% of the time. The NFL obviously has these numbers wrong.:D

No that is correct. It is just that people see what they want to see to prove their point.

Pretty mature tag there whoever put it in...

This is an arguement that no one wil ever get to the bottom of.

I am very far from an expert on football, but surely 'Foxball' is more run and gun. Rely on the running game to have two attempts to get the first down and use the passing game to pick up big gains and prevent the defense from stacking the box? That type of game does NOT require a 'game manager' or 'dink dunker'. It needs someone who can throw a deep ball and is not afraid to do it. I personally see that Delhomme isn't a bad fit here, but I worry that this is going to have HUGE ramifications on his confidence to throw it deep. So I am more than concerned that we are going to stick by him.

BUT

This is the perfect time to use McCown and Moore to see if they are legit. We have a fantastic line, fantastic backs and a fantastic Wr with two decent possession receivers. I would honestly like to see a younger guy get the opportunity to garner some confidence if Delhomme is still shell shocked mentally.

What I definately disagree with is bringing someone else in. The free agents are shot. Leftwich is the only option and he got pushed out by David Garrard, who is in a very similar mould to Carr. He has a slow wind up and couple that with poor mobility, play action passes could end badly as the whole process would take an eternity. He also aint bright.

Trading for a QB is foolish. It is impossible to tell if they excel in a system or if they are simply THAT good. So mortgaging the teams future is a crazy thing to do, especially as we most likely would need to give a mega bucks contract for a guy who is yet to throw a pass for us, even in practice.

I haven't posted in this thread since page 2. Please don't drag me back into this.
