Fox likes backup QBs, but change possible

I have been a fan of McCown for a long time. I loved that we finally got him on board as a backup. I like Moore as well. I still firmly believe that given time (and Rip Scherer) he can be a viable QB of the future.

That said, I acknowledge the possibility of change, just as Fox does here. My preference though would be to keep McCown and Moore, and the presence of Scherer factors into that point.

In my opinion, the addition of Scherer puts us in a whole new ballgame. I still expect the result to be that McCown acts as a bridge and Moore becomes the future. The only question to me is the timetable.

Any deal for Delhomme will be done to keep him as the quarterback here for the next few years, not for short-term salary cap relief. I'm going to say that again, because the lunatic fringe has struggled to understand this offseason. They're going to do a deal with Jake because they want to keep him around.

When (almost certainly not if) they extend him, they'll clear between $2 million and $3 million worth of room. That's probably enough to sign their draft class, even if they don't touch any of the other veteran contracts.

When you add in the $16.7 balloon payment that'll come with a Julius Peppers deal, they can then go sign all the spare parts they need (like someone to long snap and backup linemen) and start working on the next wave of deals.

Make up your mind, you nut hugger. Are we signing him because we love him, or is it a cap move? If it's not the later, why'd you mention it? And shame on you for basically saying a Pep deal is for certain.

I know Rock Hill is boring, but get out once in a while. Experience life. Stop setting up camp in the Panthers' locker room and acting like you're part of the team. Yaz had enough of that and went on to a bigger job. Here's hoping you do to.

And as for what Fox said about FA...gee, coach, why don't we decide to NEVER sign a FA (not talking about this season), just use the draft, and give all that extra money to charity!!

MPF,

I think he could be compensated. If we extend him 2 more years by turning almost all of his full 2009 salary into most of his signing bonus so that he counts 7 million against the cap this year but receives his 5 million salary and lets say a signing bonus of 6 million- 5 million of his converted salary from this year and another million on top- he gets 11 million this year in real dollars,

His cap number for next year is 2 million from the signing bonus and he could get 6 million next year as salary and still fit into the 30% rule and 8 million in salary his last year. If people forget about the cap hit and look at what he is actually receiving which is around 5 million in salary in 2009 it is easy to see that he could get twice that amount in real money this year, he could get a raise over this year for the next 2 years and receive a total of 25 million over the next 3 years in actual dollars which is in line with starting quarterbacks. If you throw in some roster bonuses in the 2010 or 2011 you can make the contract worth 30-35 million to please everyone and if we he cut him you are not out a ton of guaranteed money.

From a cap point of view he will cost around 7 million in 2009, maybe 9 million in 2010, and perhaps 11 or 12 million in 2011 which is not much more than he cost us this year.

It all works and we get a 3 million cap saving this year.

I think.......

To be honest that is really hard to follow. I'm not sure but I don't think that would work but, well, I'm just not sure.

Any bonuses also count against the cap in some way. Really, it's not Jake's salary that is eating up so much of the cap. Only half of his cap hit is actual salary and the other half is bonuses that were pushed back from past restructures.

I will say this, if anyone GM can make it happen in the NFL I wouldn't want anyone other than Hurney doing this. But just like your post it will be very, very complicated to make it happen and save the Panthers some cap space this year.

my thing is mccown is young enough to be a starter him self i dont think he is old enought to be the bridge..

and then moore contract is up next year.what if he wants to go somewere else.

I think McCown's old enough. He's not far from the age Delhomme was when he took over.

As to Moore, that's a "cross that bridge when we come to it" thing. Barring his having to come into a game and lighting it up, demand for him may not be all that great elsewhere.

My preferred timetable would likely be one or two more years of Delhomme, a year or two of McCown, then Moore.

I agree with this and is probably the only area I disagree with Mr. Scot on this issue. McCown IMO is the primary vetren backup and when Delhomme is no longer the starter Moore will be the starter with possibly McCown continuing to be the vetren backup. But really its all a guess on our part and probably nothing is set in stone on the Panthers part.

I'd agree that's a realistic possibility.

When you look down the roster, the profiles are honestly quite similar.

Delhomme = Delhomme (duh)

McCown = Mobile Delhomme

Moore = Younger, More Accurate Delhomme

Not hard to see the kind of QB Fox prefers, is it?

LOL, No doubt! I actually like Delhomme and agree with Fox on that "style" of QB. I'm also a huge fan of Moore so I am a little biased as well.

Yeah, and I agree with him. Some of the nuthugger comments are because I think some of us like the TYPE Fox prefers while the others like the thought of getting and building around the elite $$$ type guys (which I do NOT).

It's a bit of a disconnect that a conservative coach like Fox prefers ballsy "gunslinger" types, isn't it?

Makes sense when you think about it though. If all he had back there was a David Carr type "safe" QB, it would look like...well...like it did when we had David Carr :willy_nilly:

It'd be a waste to sit Moore that long. Let him go somewhere else. He's already been on the bench (sans the playing time he's had), and if your scenario played out, might have to sit two more, THEN 1-2 more with McCown? Ouch.

Mr. Scot:

Yeah, usually defensive minded HCs prefer Cassel types.

Some poster, CRA I think, pointed out something like that Fox may like that because sometimes he needs to be forced out of his comfort zone by that type. Almost like he knows he is conservative minded offensively and he needs someone who will take risks at times but Fox doesn't want to DICTATE when they occur.

Valid. We'll see how it plays out. In all honestly, I think one year is more likely than two.

My take as well.

I'd add that the impression I got from talking to Chris Spielman was that Jeff Davidson, while definitely a proponent of run heavy offense, might not be quite as conservative at heart as John Fox.
