It takes about the same amount of time on average to play as a football game, sometimes even shorter.

The NBA has too many damn teams and too many damn games. Have 12 teams in each conference. Play each team in your conference four times (44 games) and each team in the other conference twice (24 games). That's 68 games. Then the top four teams in each conference get in, only four teams play a best of three for those third and fourth spots.

Make the games mean something to the fan, other than "hey I saw Lebron dunk today". Problem is, most of the fans in the stands...that's all they care to see.
