Not even soldier! The civil war (Excuse me! War of Northern Agression!)hadn't started yet.

Job only lasted 19 months and was replaced with Automation!

The Job?

Pony Express Rider!

Cut mail time from St Louis to San Francisco from 20 days to 10!, but cost $2.00! (1860's money) to mail a letter!

In 1875, a Colt Peacemaker only cost $8.00!

The job was replaced with the telegraph!

Was the Pony Express specifically really the most dangerous? Things I'm reading suggest that only one rider was ever killed in the line of duty, and something like 20 were killed during an Indian War in 1960, but they may not have been actual riders, but employees of the company in one of their stations, heh

but I guess since it only ran for a year...

was definitely a crazy job...

I have been wrong before. When I was doing research for one of my unpublished, western books. I remember that the Pony Express life expectancy was 6 months. Maybe that's what they projected? And why they wanted orphans?

Beats me, but I do know the pay was crazy good for the job. Hardly matters if it was "most dangerous" or just "really dangerous," but I don't know where the life expectancy of 6 months came from; only 1 rider was killed supposedly. I think it was probably more dangerous to be one of their employees at a station since they were targets of attack during an Indian War in 1860.

Maybe the typical rider was only employed for 6 months?
