Otah to IR

I don't blame the player.

I blame Hurney for not preparing.

Here's the bottom line and we all know it, or should as it does not take a rocket scientist to know, that a 24 year old Right Tackle with no meniscus lining in his knee is NOT a good situation and it should have been addressed.

Again, this is a business, and a player's past injuries predict his futures, there is just no question about it.

No meniscus, means no cushion for that knee and constant swelling for a position that requires pressure on knees.

Dumb, just incredibly, and inexplcably dumb. As much as I love Thomas Davis, its the same story.

Actually from what I remember about the surgery last year, they repaired the meniscus they didn't remove it. That was the reason it took so long to heal last year. So he should have the knee completely intact.

On the other hand Otah won't play through pain and that is a killer in the NFL. Funny thing is that his senior year in college he played all year with a sprained ankle with no problem. He comes to the NFL and suddenly doesn't want to play with a hang nail.

yeah, I think Rivera only hints at his true colors during his pressers.....Rivera ain't got no use for a player who isn't willing to play through it.

personally, I think Rivera challenged Otah last week ( I am making an educated guess his recent remarks clue that in).......and Otah continued to be himself. Rivera was tired of it.

I haven't read scouting reports that made mention of Otah having injury problems.

He started 17 consecutive game at Valley Forge, and played all 12 games in 2006 and 2007 at Pitt.

You are right. In fact he played his senior year with a sprained ankle most of the season with no problems. That is why he didn't participate in OTAs and some of camp because he was rehabbing the college injury. So nothing would have given a clue he was a pansy. In fact you would have assumed just the opposite based on his college performance.

Now we know why Rivera was pumping up Bell the last few weeks. He already knew this was going to happen.

Not saying he is in the drivers seat. Carolina makes him the backup. They control it. When his deal is up he is done.
sorry. i was more or less agreeing with you. the person you were responding to made it sound like it wouldn't happen b/c otah wouldn't agree to being a backup.

that is Hurney's actual first round choices.......now pick a random team and compare how they did in the the first round in recent history. Hurney's first round is what will continue to keep him employed. He knocks them out of the park. After that, he is just your typical hit or miss GM.

You forgot these two picks:

Eric Wood

Mike Iupati

Oh... yeah... those are guys we didn't get because we traded the pick to move up to get Jeff Otah in 2008 and to move up to get Everett Brown and Mike Goodson in 2009.

Lets see how they are doing:

Eric Wood - Center - Drafted by Buffalo.

Wood was selected with the 28th pick of the 2009 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. Counted on to start at right guard, Wood joined a completely retooled offensive line that was expected to feature two rookie starters—him, and second round pick Andy Levitre at left guard—and no players returning at the same position. On July 28, 2009, Wood signed a five-year contract with the Bills, reportedly worth more than $12 million.

On November 22, 2009, Wood sustained a compound fracture of the tibia and fibula in the fourth quarter of an 18–15 loss to the Jacksonville Jaguars in week 11, after Jaguars DT Montavious Stanley ran into Wood's leg. Wood underwent season-ending surgery in a Jacksonville hospital and did not return to Buffalo with the team. He was placed on the injured reserve list on November 24, 2009.

On March 30, 2010, Wood told the Buffalo Bills that his leg was healing well and that he gave it an 80% chance to be ready for training camp. He eventually started 14 games in the 2010 NFL season, missing only Steelers and Vikings games because of an ankle injury.

So a freak accident sidelined him on week 10 the year he was drafted, but he came back and was a starter for 14 games last year, and has started every game this year.

To everyone's surprise, the Bills are 4-2. And they are #4 in rushing offense in the league.

Mike Iupati - Guard - Drafted by the 49ers

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mike_Iupati#Professional_career

Iupati had a strong start to the 2010 season, not committing a penalty, or allowing a sack until Week 5. He made valuable contributions to the 49ers' running game, delivering downfield blocks. ESPN's Mike Sandos selected Iupati to his 2010 All-NFC West Team, while the Pro Football Writers Association named him one of their 2010 NFL All-Rookie selections.

Oh, and hey... what do you know... the 49ers are 5-1, with a QB who everyone was thinking was gonna be a bust.

So, basically we gave up two great offensive linemen, who have contributed to their team's winning records, with a bust undersized DE whom we've already released, an injury laden OT who will probably be released, and a late-round RB who has ball control issues and has a hard time making special teams.

When Hurney misses, he winds up shooting this team in the foot.

Damn, Hurney can't even get 1st rounders right anymore. Without that, what possible reason is there to still have him as the GM?

Statistically how hard is it picking a successful first rounder? Surely it is above 50% if not much higher? No need to act like it is so hard to do because it seems to me to be the easiest of all rounds.

A good GM to me is consistent at good picks throughout the draft, also taking into consideration team needs and how the player fits in as well as player value for which round a said player in chosen (ie. AE).

Hurney is average on paper and below average in performance. If he was better than average I would suspect a better team performance but who knows I'm probably way off, I am not a paid professional like Otah.

Had Hurney missed on Gettis and Hardy and other later rounds he would be exposed big time (as not being so great), but he should get credit for those.
