Delhomme Extension?

Phoenaxe

Recommended Posts

i understand this may be a salary cap move, and there are no free agents/possible draft picks to upgrade our team... hopefully this extension is just to develop a QB that we may draft next year with that QB class.

I do wish we would have an open competition between moore and delhomme though (possibly save us a draft pick next year)

You know what's funny? Most of you guys hide behind the question "What better option is out there right now?" The point is that no one knows. Jake Delhomme is a prime example of why your question means about as much as a fart that I let go ten years ago.

No one knew that Jake was the better option when he was brought in as an undrafted free agent that rode New Orleans' bench for several years. No one knew that he would come in and lead the Panthers to the Super Bowl.

What I do know is that Rodney Peete did not turn the ball over six times during the 2003 opener. The offense was stalling (not all Peete's fault), but there have been many games over the past six seasons in which the offense has stalled only because Jake Delhomme lays a complete egg.

I could care less who the QB is. I support the Panthers, not one particular player. However, I can realize that Jake was brought in for a QB that was not performing any nearly as bad as Jake as proven capable of. At what point is it enough? I don't know, and I don't really care. It is, however, a valid question.

do you honestly think it requires a 100% sure upgrade over Delhomme to consider an investment?

In a word, yes. Why on earth would a team knowingly make a move that makes them worse?

Because that's not how teams perceive it to be the same way we do, especially when we've seen Green Bay take Aaron Rodgers even though Brett Favre was the beloved unquestioned starter, and I think that was one of the only areas of Packers football that was solid last year.

Do you really think those situations compare at all?

Favre was in his annual "retire/not retire" mode and the team was tired of it. Any comparison here? With regard to Rodgers, he had been sitting behind Favre learning the system for several seasons and the team felt he was primed to be a starter. Do we have anyone like that?

The collective opinion for Delhomme's minions has always been the low risk option is the way to go. It's not going to change at all unless Delhomme continues his occasional massive hiccups of games where he accounts for multiple turnovers next year.

...but then you're going to have the people ready to turn the reigns to Matt Moore who has not proven himself at all to be all that people claim him to be and if that doesn't work then there's this guy who couldn't break 7 yards per pass attempt even with one of the best WR tandems in the entire league (Boldin, Fitz)

Please inform me on the teams/organizations that have given less of a poo at QB than we have the past 7 years? That's what makes us different from the rest of the league is we've had little to no ambition to improve the quality of the QB position ever since Delhomme walked in against Jacksonville.

It's gonna come back to bite us in the ass big time.

People were saying the same thing this time last year, and the year before that.

Disagreeing with fan opinion doesn't count as "not giving a crap".

Bottom line: You wrote all of that to essentially say that you don't have a name for a QB available right now that's an upgrade over Delhomme. Correct?

Right after the playoff disaster, I posted a thread expecting him to be done.

Just a short time ago, I posted a thread allowing for the possibility that the team could make Delhomme a June 1st cut and go with McCown as the starter.

Are there possibilities? Sure.

Is any of them realistic at this point? No :nonod:

Bottom line here: There's every indication that John Fox considers the playoff failure an aberration, not a sign of things to come. And whether you agree with that position or not, there is evidence to support that position.

If we sign him to an extension me and the Panthers may need some time apart this summer...just a month or so.

:)

yeah till the draft right, because it's a month or so away:D

Seriously if anyone thought that we were going to replace Jake or that we weren't going to offer him a contract extension you are in la la land.

There is also evidence for those believing that Jake's time should be winding down in Carolina. Realistically, Jake seems to have struggled more on a game-to-game basis last year than he has any other season.

ughh.....CUTLER!!! We have only been screaming for him for about 3 weeks now

:mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2::mad2:

Even if you accept that Cutler is an upgrade (and that is debatable) Cutler is not available, no matter how many Maddenesque trade scenarios people want to post.

Even the Niners couldn't trade for him, and they have way higher draft position, more cap room than us and could offer a young QB in return.

Jay Cutler - no. Marvel Smith quite possibly, yes. Cutler seems destined to stay in Denver. Word is owner Pat Bowlen might be overruling new coach Josh McDaniels and forcing McDaniels to make nice with his diva thrower. Everyone has a price and Cutler might be tradable, but the price is supposedly very high and far too rich for the 49ers.

Niner Insider

Do you seriously think a team that's looking to extend Delhomme is going to turn around and give up the picks and or players it would take to get Cutler, in the process hamstringing the defense for the coming season?

Then there is the misunderstanding. You think Delhomme is done, Fox doesn't. You accept what it is, we don't. Doesn't mean you're wrong for that, its just that this is a message board and we like to express what we feel. I too think Delhomme is done and that Fox is going to ride this horse till it drops dead. But Im still going to express that Fox and Hurney are dumb for that and that Delhomme is a horrible QB.

But do you have any evidence to support that John Fox believes that?

There is evidence to suggest that he doesn't.
