Delhomme Extension?

“Sometimes today’s headlines aren’t the right things (on which to base) a big decision,” said Fox. “Jake had games like that during the season. He didn’t have an especially great game at Tampa. He didn’t have an especially great game out in Oakland. I think that can be said for any quarterback in the National Football League.

“So when you’re a decision-maker, you can’t let the emotion of that one outing blur the big picture … I wholeheartedly appreciate what fans say, and the critics. But I think he had a bad game; he’s not a bad quarterback.”

Pertinent quotes:

Delhomme’s agent, Rick Smith, said the uncertainty of the NFL’s collective bargaining agreement factors into the situation. Unless a CBA extension is reached, the 2010 season is scheduled to be played without a salary cap, without a lockout of players by team owners possible before the 2011 season.

That makes sense.

The Panthers’ firm commitment to Delhomme as their starting quarterback comes despite increased criticism from fans following his six-turnover performance in Carolina’s 33-13 home playoff loss to Arizona on Jan. 10.

Can we now put the Cutler discussion to rest, please?

I had expected that they were going to use this cap money to sign rookies after the draft. The timing of it could make it about right for that.

all the belly aching that all the jake haters do about the QB situation is not going to stop.

they are still going to call the people who aren't on their bandwagon jake jock sniffers or whatever stupid term they have made up for the people who don't hate jake like they do.

panthers are committed to jake for the near future.

they don't have in their plans to go out and chase someone down to replace him after a couple monumentally bad games.

there are no good alternatives out there at the moment.

there are no good FAs and there weren't to begin with.

there aren't any good QBs in the draft that could make an immediate impact.

there isn't anyway that we can get cutler, even if that was a good idea.

there isn't a chance that we are going to hear then end of people screaming that all of the above is wrong.

this debate will continue even though from the team's standpoint it isn't up for debate. jake is their man going into 2009. like it or not.

i am not that big on a lot of college QBs so how will nexts year class be better i know sam bradford is better than the QBs out now..but who else

The Golden Calf of Bristol, Sam Bradford, and Colt McCoy all have my eye.

Sam Bradford being the best choice. Colt McCoy could be a decent after a year or two.

The Golden Calf of Bristol has the intangible leadership skills that can't be developed. I would draft him just to be a cheerleader.

    • they have the best defense they've had in a long time...probably the best in the reid/mahommes era.  but i think they are probably the most beatable they've been in a while as well. record doesn't exactly bear that out, but they just don't look as strong on offense as they usually do. lots of reasons for that, like trying to build chemistry with newer receivers, but right now they just aren't as frightening as they typically are. i mean they'll probably win tomorrow, but i don't see them as the strongest team in the AFC right now.
    • He will likely remain unsigned the remainder of this season(barring someone being in a pure QB panic AND making poor decisions) largely due to the cost. I do think he will get multiple offers to be a backup QB and perhaps a couple to potentially start this offseason.  I will continue to beat the same horse over and over.....he should go to a successful team with an established starter. If I were him, go to somewhere like SF, LAR, etc. Somewhere with a successful QB coach and brilliant offensive mind and ALSO a set situation at QB. Ride the pine and adjust for a year or two. Chill and be around better culture. I would suggest the same for Bryce but he will be limited to wherever we can trade him.
    • I dont think the clock has started yet on canales.  Once he gets his guy then the pressure starts.  WFNZ/mike kaye said  yesterday that he thinks there are 4 options here regardless of bryces status, Geno, Fields, Wilson maybe Jones.
