The biggest issue with our offense nobody is talking about

I have some time on my hands today, so I went back and watched every possession in the 2nd half. My observations:

  • The play calling was very good. Nice balance between run and pass. No issues here.

  • 1st possession, we put together an 8.5 minute drive for a TD.

  • Our 2nd possession was single-handedly killed by Byron Bell. 1st play, near sack given up by Bell, Cam has to throw it away. After a short run on 2nd down, Cam is sacked on 3rd, again with Abraham beating Bell.

  • 3rd drive featured holding calls on Naanee and Bell and we are forced to punt.

  • 4th drive starts with a nice run by DWill for 18 yds. 2nd play was the intercepted screen to DWill. This was simply a great play by Peters of Atlanta. The throw was good and the design was good. If Peters doesn't get that ball, DWill is still running.

  • Last drive featured some nice throws by Cam in garbage time until ultimately there was 4 seconds left and he threw up the hail mary.

Forgetting about the defense for a minute, our problems on offense in the 2nd half were due to some pretty spotty play by Byron Bell, and an exceptional play by Peters of Atlanta.

In my opinion, neither Cam nor DWill nor Chud have "playing from behind issues".

Cam is very pedestrian, borderline terrible when we have a lead. We've had a lead in every game except Chicago, yet once we're up on the scoreboard our offense becomes inept.

I took the time to manually extract Cams stats from the game data, and here's what I found, keep in mind this is only when we have a lead (not tied):

Cam is

21/40 194yds 0 TD 1 INT

We've had 14 possessions with the lead.

11 punts, 1 INT, and 2 FG's

Both FG's came against Green Bay, which means in every other game when we've led we've had to punt all but one time, against Arizona when Cam threw an INT.

Our defense has some well documented issues and certainly is the weak link on this team, but this is still concerning. Cam has been well above average and I love watching him play but when we get a lead he turns into a pumpkin.

What's the deal Cam? :jc:

I've noticed this too. I wonder if the play calling changes once we get the lead. people keep complaining about our defense and I admit that i'm one of them, but with the success and weapons we have on offense we should be able to outscore any team in the NFL.

Hell the "The greatest show on turf" the 99 Rams didn't have an above average defense. they just went out there and scored 30+ points a game. I believe we could be this successful and we have shown it throughout the year

cam is not the biggest issue with the offense.

a rookie qb is supposed to lean on the defense and run game, not the other way around.

cam should be managing the game...not be the game.

We cannot run the ball consistently. The O-Line needs to step up. Our trench play on both sides of the ball is the main reason we are 1-5 along with the decimation of our LB core. Also, the secondary is subpar.

We have a rookie QB, a rookie head coach and the Rams defense was way better than the current Panthers D. The Rams had Warner, Vermeil, better receivers and Faulk.
