The biggest issue with our offense nobody is talking about

Cam is very pedestrian, borderline terrible when we have a lead. We've had a lead in every game except Chicago, yet once we're up on the scoreboard our offense becomes inept.

I took the time to manually extract Cams stats from the game data, and here's what I found, keep in mind this is only when we have a lead (not tied):

Cam is

21/40 194yds 0 TD 1 INT

We've had 14 possessions with the lead.

11 punts, 1 INT, and 2 FG's

Both FG's came against Green Bay, which means in every other game when we've led we've had to punt all but one time, against Arizona when Cam threw an INT.

Our defense has some well documented issues and certainly is the weak link on this team, but this is still concerning. Cam has been well above average and I love watching him play but when we get a lead he turns into a pumpkin.

What's the deal Cam? :jc:

I think it's more of the play calling than Cam. But yeah, Cam is a rookie and still has work to do.

This is what I was going to ask... is it Cam or the coaches? We used to be notorious for playing not to lose with a lead and I was hoping that had changed with the new coaching staff.

Somebody analyze the playcalls with a lead and tell me... I'm supposed to be working so I have to at least look busy with other things... like posting bewbies.

No, it's not just Cam. In the Atlanta game, for example, penalties kept us backed up close to our endzone. The offense as a whole hasn't learned how to play with a lead, nor has Chud called the right plays when we've had the lead.

The team as a whole needs to learn how to close games out.

This is kind of a misleading stat. Cam overall has played better in the 1st half then during the 2nd except for the jaguars game.

Against Green bay, Chicago, Arizona, and Falcons there were definitely momentum shifts were the opposing teams made big plays either on offense, special teams or defense.

Hester Returning a punt, Arizona making two long touchdowns, one on special teams, Jordy Nelson scoring a long touchdown, Atlanta getting an interception.

The team just has a problem closing out games and making critical plays when its crunch time. That will change. While other teams have made critical plays when it matters most against us. The Panthers will get it together.

Penalties have hurt a lot more then the play calling. Key drops and bad passes by Cams have not helped. Team just needs to mature and get that killer instinct.

When we have had the lead, Cam is continually leaned upon by the offense. The running game can't get anything going, and on 3rd down it comes down to Cam making a play. If DLo or Stew can get the ball more and make something happen, it would take so much pressure off of Cam to add to that lead.

Seriously, I want to see more play calls for the RB's. Cam can make things happen, but when there is a lead sometimes you have to be more conservative. The play calls have been very aggressive, even on 3rd and short, and that needs to change. It hasn't been working so far, so try something different.

The offense has not been as good in the second half versus the first half and even worse in the fourth quarter. Most games are decided in the fourth quarter and we have not done much outside of Jacksonville in that respect.

Some of it is Cam, some is lack of second half adjustments to the other team's adjustments after halftime, some of it is penalties, and special teams qand porous defense makes up the rest.

I really don't think this is news to anyone, but most of us are trying to decide how much should be put on a rookie quarterback to win games in the fourth quarter. I would like to see him move the ball and have some game winning drives but am not sure that is realistic. Without a good defense pulling out games late might be a stretch. We need to keep working to score points but we have to eliminate the mistakes and be more opportunistic when we do get the ball in the second half. Most of all not give up big momentum shifting scores on special teams and defense like we have done the past few weeks.
