I swear I was going to make this thread yesterday but it doesn't make sense

Hardy, Johnson shouldnt be in the 3-4. But, I mean... its Rivera. Its not like we all can say we're surprised

Coulda said the same thing about Mario Williams, it worked out well for them till he got hurt.

I hope so, because even if we have the right personnel you're talking about a year or two before it can really be effective.

wrt the defense, that's the sort of timeline we were on regardless imo. even before the injuries i felt that the expectations of the d were very unreasonable. yes the injuries have hurt, but they did not take us from a good d to amongst the worst in the league-- we were likely always going to struggle defensively. hardy is nowhere near good enough to be the reason to avoid scheme alterations. johnson could be, idk. not sold that he the caliber of de that others do, but he is at the least very solid and it would be imprudent to mitigate his abilities by using him at 3-4 de. that said you noted the elephant role, which seems like a good fit/strong possibility (of course who knows if it works). that said i do agree w/you that a full on shift midseason would prob be disastrous but. . .

I mean, who the hell changes defensive schemes in the middle of the season?

not as drastic, but i swear i recall noticing/seeing something about us switching to cover 1 like halfway through meeks' first season after (predictably) playing mostly cover 2 to start.

defense is just not hacking it, esp against the run. if they have any inkling of making a change down the road, which they probably always did given rivera's background, now is as good a time as any to start mixing in some looks and seeing what they like with who we have. even if they aren't truly looking to blow it up and go 3-4, i am all for trying new things. the coaches

Nope, the Green Bay Packers proved that is absolutely not the case.

3-4? Bring it on!

to be fair the Packers had 2 first round picks to help make that transition and happened to stumble on BJ Raji and Clay Matthews, two of the best players at their respective positions.

Yes, now that we only have 6 LB's on the team, let's move to a 34, BRILLIANT!

Perhaps the DT's really are the problem if Sean thinks we'd do better with one less of them on the field despite the roster.

I think they are really high on Kearse as a NT in the 3-4, McClain might even perform better as a 3-4 DE as well. You would probably see more of them on the field in the 3-4 as they would have to rotate as one of the Ends and as the NT.

Pretty sure the Packer GM doesn't stumble onto anything. If you think it cant be done because of Hurney I understand.

A coaching staff who will devise and utilize schemes to fit their personel's strenghts? Yeah we have them now.

Yeah I worded it weirdly, meant no slight at Thompson(probably the best GM in the league), but 2 first round picks helped a LOT.

I'm not gonna sit here and play armchair coach, because if Rivera thinks we can switch he damn sure knows more than me and anyone else on this forum, but it's not an easy transition and we'd likely go through a couple years of "wtf is going on" unless we strike gold in the draft.
