Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

Didn't realize some 3-4 teams were interested in McClain as a DE?

If he projected well as a 3-4 DE then it surprises me that he also projected well as a 3-tech in a 4-3 scheme since they require very different skill sets.

If I remember correctly some sites had him ranked higher as a 3-4 end. It why I was excited about the pick as he could play he 3-4 end and the 3 technique. It gives the defense a lot of flexibility when a guy can do both.

I just don't know how you are going to install a whole 34 defensive playbook mid-season, especially with a group of players who have for the most part never played in a 34 defense.

I could see running many more 34 plays, but changing the whole scheme right now would be a train wreck.

I am glad to see that we have a coaching staff who is not afraid to shake things up when it's not working.

looks like we have a train wreck going on right now anyway.

i agree that it's good to have a coaching staff willing to switch things up midstream when it';s not working. pretty refreshing to have a coaching staff that will admit that things aren't working.

With the increased emphasis on passing, I think the move to a 3-4 defense is inevitable, it's only a question of when teams decide to bite the bullet and make the move. With all the rules favoring the offense and esp the passing game, the only effective way to play defense these days is to get pressure on the passer and the 3-4 defense is the best way to do that.
