Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

Also sounds like McDermott realized he needed to backtrack on his initial comment by clarifying that they're talking about running more 3-4 plays vs. changing base scheme... but the first quote was probably closer to the truth.

I'm sure Rivera will be a little annoyed with him for letting the cat out of the bag.

So, I'm assuming next year...our 3-4 D would look like this

DE-Fua

DT-R.Edwards

DE-McClain

OLB-C.Johnson

ILB-Beason

ILB-J.Anderson

OLB-Hardy

Not including future draft picks/FA's/etc.

It completely changes everything draft wise if they plan on moving completely to the 3-4 next year or a hybrid of it. It makes NT a definite need, as well as DE. (unless they think that Kearse can be that guy long term as he's still really young.)

If you play Kearse and Fields more, then it's at least a little better personnel wise.

NT - Fields/Kearse

RE - Sua/McClain (McClain had some 3-4 teams interested in him as a 3-4 guy)

LE - Hardy (It seems they like Johnson in the Elephant role)

OLB - Johnson and Applewhite are the starters (backed up by Williams and Norwood)

ILB - Anderson and Connor (Backed up by Gaithers and Phillips)

That puts the Dline as oversize with some pass rush from Hardy (Johnson should be able to use his raw power even more effectively with more running room.)

Didn't realize some 3-4 teams were interested in McClain as a DE?

If he projected well as a 3-4 DE then it surprises me that he also projected well as a 3-tech in a 4-3 scheme since they require very different skill sets.

You think our defense has been bad till this point, try totally changing scheme mid-season...

...that's my point, we've sucked balls. Might as well get them to learn new scheme now and get better for next year. The season is pretty much over. Also, if we keep losing, The higher the draft pick. The better personnel we will get for the 3-4 defense. Also, next year's FA. Might as well do it now Catman. Would you want this done at the beginning of next season? I know I don't.

I just don't know how you are going to install a whole 34 defensive playbook mid-season, especially with a group of players who have for the most part never played in a 34 defense.

I could see running many more 34 plays, but changing the whole scheme right now would be a train wreck.

I am glad to see that we have a coaching staff who is not afraid to shake things up when it's not working.

The Panthers basically installed an effective offensive system on the fly.

If more 3-4 look isn't effective immediately, what will the net result be? Run defense can't be any worse for what it's worth.

It does seem like this move is being spearheaded by Rivera. Is it an indictment on how Rivera feels about McDermitt? He's a 4-3 guy, and it seems like Rivera isn't confident he can get the job done with the guys he's using.

Howver, Rivera has ran both a 4-3 (Chicago) and a 3-4 (San Diego), so maybe he feels like the 3-4 might suit this group better.

He's the head coach, and it's his call. He needs to fix it, especially since he was hired for his defensive background. Most teams incorporate both 4-3 and 3-4 looks, regardless of their base defense. The "differences" are overblown a lot of times.

A 4-3 defense requires athletic LB's. We have the least athletic 4-3 starting LB's in the league right now. The linebacker play is the biggest deficiency of defense right now in my opinion. Hopefully this can mask this some.

I do like that Rivera is stepping up and trying to make changes on a defense that is obviously not working.
