Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

I like what Applewhite said in the Carolinagrowl article.

I think it is harder for us to fill the bigger ILB needed for 3-4. I have always supported Conner in the past, but he hasn't impressed much lately. I think our LBs are too small right now, and our run defense wouldn't improve, unless we just confused the crap out of people.

Haven't read past the first post in this thread.

I've stayed out of it until there was more information.

Reading what i have today, the team is just finially getting around to using some 3-4 alignments.

If most of you remember when revera became head coach, he said he intended to use both the 4-3, and 3-4.

Nothing i've read says the the panthers are going to change to a 3-4 as their base.

All that being said, i'm definately for the coaches doing what it takes to improve the defense. Having a more flexiible defense, will be an advantage for the defense.

Sean McDermott says the Panthers would considering moving toward becoming more of a 3-4 defense in the future. Interesting.

No change mid season but we could switch off season.

I think James Anderson can play in the inside with Beason. The problem we might have is to find a 5tech DE. I think Greg Hardy will play well at the other one. We also might need to find another ILB just in case of injurys, an to groom and I think this guy could be perfect.

DE - Hardy

NT - Alameda Ta’amu?

DE - CJ

OLB - Applewhite

ILB - Beason

ILB - Anderson

OLB - Coples?

CB- Gamble

CB- Butler/Hogan

FS - Godfrey

SS - Martin

I say they draft @ #1 either NT Alameda Ta’amu from Washington or DE Quinton Coples from UNC.

Coples would be a DE or 5 tech in a 3-4 and CJ would be the OLB. but passing situations with Greg Hardy, and Quinton Coples as the dt's and CJ and Applewhite at DE would be nice.

Well, then what you first posted is incorrect. That article has a quote from McDermott that states if the players are comfortable, that the base defense next season could be the 3-4. I expect that to be the case, I also expect to see the 3-4 more often as the season moves along. They've been practicing it from the beginning.

i read more than one write up. I also remember things the head coach made points on when he was hired.

So go ahead...say im incorrect. I really not here for the "told you so" moments. Someday, you may outgrow that. Let's hope.

I expect the 3-4 to be used. I expected it since rivera stated he wants to use both. Remember when he said that?

They want to play more 3-4. That's been stated.

I still don't expect the 3-4 to be our base defense next season.

Everything i've read including steve reeds' take, supports this.

Oh, and i also stated i'm for any adjustments/changes bring improvement.

So stop acting like i'm hating it.

What's next, ya gonna tell me i hate the panthers?

If you'd read somebody eelse than steve reed (highly overrated, especially on here), you would know that it is rivera's deire to play both well, that they decide which they'll use more based on our opponent...week to week.

It's still yet to be seen whether the 3-4 will be the base defense next year. I'm not expecting it, while i am expecting more 3-4 sightings.

We'll see how it develops.

In talking long term, Ron Rivera said he'd still like to be base 4-3 defense but with a lot of 3-4 tendencies.

josephperson Joe Person

Ron Rivera said Panthers will "tinker with" the 3-4. But 4-3 will remain the base, primarily b/c LBs and DEs Johnson, Hardy built for 4-3.

There you go..
