Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

He was not considered a very good NT in KC.

He actually was a good NT. See the thing about it is, some people look at statistics and try to determine if a player was good or not. In some cases it matter in this case it doesn't. He was a steady lineman and he did what he was suppose to do and that was to occupy blockers and let LB's run free.

I'm not looking at statistics. I read an article from KC where they discussed how he was not progressing well with the transition to NT. He was not well suited for NT and they were looking to improve the position. That's not a knock on him as he played 4-3 DT for a long time.

If I was looking at statistics I would be noticing that as a NT his tackle and sack production was basically the same as it was when he was playing 4-3 DT.

Reed's article. Definitely sounds like we may run the 3-4 as our base defense next year...

If Ron had plans of us moving to a 3-4, which I'm sure he did, why didn't he start asking for guys to fit it

And why cut Brown? Thats an OLB right there... is Hurney & Ron on the same page

Probably because Norwood and Brown are both tweeners and Norwood outplayed him... duh.

I see were you coming from becasue in 2004 when he was with the Bills and they were running a 4-3 defense he had his best year sack wise. But what i'm trying to explain is that when he went to KC and they moved into a 3-4 scheme he grew into the position. He wasn't the best at it but he grew into it because he averaged a total of 55 total tackles "Career Best" there first two years in the system.

So i'm not saying he is best suited for the position, but he has had time in it and the time he has had in it he played actually well. He might not have played well if you compare him to Vince Wilfork or Casey Hampton. But he will help the transition if the panthers are really serious about the move.

I like what Applewhite said in the Carolinagrowl article.

Applewhite, who was part of the Chargers league’s top-ranked defense last year, believes the Panthers have what it takes to run the 3-4 scheme.

“I feel like we have the personnel here to do it,” Applewhite said. “You just need outside linebackers that can set the edge and disrupt. Charles Johnson is a multi-talented player. It’s something he should be able to do quite well.”

Added McDermott: We have some players to work with there and that is a good sign for us.”

Johnson, the team’s highest-paid player and leader in sacks, said he thought it was “cool” to get a chance to stand up and rush from the outside linebacker spot.

“You get to see things just by standing up,” he said. “It was all right. We only ran it a couple of times, but you can rush the passer a little bit better just by standing up because you can see it better.”

Because Brown sucked? He is still a free agent even though there are tons of teams running the 3-4 that need LB help. He simply isn't good. Nothing personal, I think he was a hard worker, but some guys just aren't fit for the NFL.

Anyways, I'll leave this thread saying one thing.. I don't really give a fug what a lot of you guys are bitching about. If Ron Rivera, one of the best defensive minds in the league, a guy who has headed not one, but TWO #1 defenses using both 4-3 AND 3-4, thinks we can switch to the 3-4 and be successful.. PRETTY SURE I'm gonna trust him more than all you armchair coaches.

Haven't read past the first post in this thread.

I've stayed out of it until there was more information.

Reading what i have today, the team is just finially getting around to using some 3-4 alignments.

If most of you remember when revera became head coach, he said he intended to use both the 4-3, and 3-4.

Nothing i've read says the the panthers are going to change to a 3-4 as their base.

All that being said, i'm definately for the coaches doing what it takes to improve the defense. Having a more flexiible defense, will be an advantage for the defense.
