Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

I don't know what y'all have been watching these past 6 games but we haven't been able to put real pressure on the QB and let alone been able to stop the run consistently. The 3-4 with the right personal will give us that pressure and run D. I think its s good look. CJ needs help in so way or another the sacks he did get this year weren't true tackles but knock downs and tags.

I think Hardy would fit perfect in a 3-4 as a DE. He's big enough to shed blockers, he's not bad against the run, and he's got a motor like you wouldn't believe. Charles Johnson is the same way, but bigger. Charles Johnson could end up being a Cullen Jenkins-esque player, during Jenkins' Green Bay days.

The ILB position wouldn't be that big of a deal. Playing ILB in the 3-4 is very similar to playing ILB in a 4-3, but, there's more responsibility in the blitzes. Not having a true NT could hurt the defense severely.

The OLB would be hard to figure out. Anderson could make a great OLB in a 3-4. He plays coverage incredibly, and can hang with the best of the TEs when he has help. It wouldn't be much of a problem for him to play OLB. As for the other OLB, we'd have to draft one. He's not on the team right now. Applewhite could rotate that position (Everette Brown could as well, but, y'know...).

The NT would be Fua. He played a NT in a very good 3-4 Stanford defense his entire college career, and he is huge. He just has to learn how to shed blocks. He hasn't had a full off-season yet, so, I expect him to be very good next year.

I just think it's a bad idea. But as someone stated above, Rivera knows better than me.

EDIT: and I can't believe I misspelled personnel in two separate posts.

I was just fugging with you. I am the worst speller on this board. I have to go back and edit my posts at least three times every time I post.

That's not true at all. 43 SAM resembles much more to a 34 ILB than a 43 MIKE. James Anderson is the only players is the only linebacker who could play in a 3-4.

Enough w/ this...

The ILB position is similar enough to a 43 MLB, that I honestly don't think it would be that big of a shift. Think about it, the ILB in a 34 relies on the ability to cover, as well as stop the run/blitz. What does Dan Connor do effectively? You're telling me he wouldn't fit into a 34 defense with his ability to fill gaps, run blitz, etc.?

Also, it would take the burden off of Connor, because he already has trouble in pass coverage. He could have the other MLB take the role of covering the field, a la a spy or a simple small zone, etc.
