Panthers moving to a 3-4??? Says McDerm

It's not. Its the first thing I thought of watching the press conference today. Just didn't want to post anything because of how the huddle reacts to any mention of the 3-4 and Carolina in the same sentence.

I just find it funny that they're toying with the idea of implementing a 3-4 scheme, when the most important position for a 3-4 defense (The NT) is obviously the reason our line sucks as of now.

It's almost laughable that Mcdermontt and Rivera could even fathom such an idea.

If they make the Move you will not see Fua playing the NT, it will be either Fields or Kearse. I think that's an improvement for at least this season as Fua needs to add some bulk and improve his technique.

size isn't the issue.

no one on the roster commands a double team, that's one of the main requirements of the 3-4 nt. fields and kearse can hold their ground, but can still be handled with a single lineman.

if they do switch or play a 3-4 variation, look for a signing in the very near future.

...and who the hell is sua?

I'm all for changes, but excuse me for thinking this smells like a move out of panic and desperation if it goes through. I don't like it. I think they should continue on trying to get some consistency before doing anything like this. I'm just not impressed with McDermott's style and his ability to get our players to remain focused, tackle and stay disciplined. Maybe part of it is personnel, but part of it has to be him too.

I don't either but you also don't pay a 3-4 End 10 million a season, that's the OLB spot there. Too much of a waste on his talents and pay check to keep him as a 3-4 end. Hardy would have to bulk up big time and add 15 pounds of muscle if you ask me.

That's why I also say if the team does move to the 3-4 then DE becomes the second biggest need if ot the biggest unless the team really feels like McClain can play the role for them. In most cases unless Hardy beefs up, he's off the field in 3-4 packages

Yup, that's an expensive 3-4 DE so I could see CJ playing the elephant - but I still wouldn't try moving Hardy to DE since I think that's a waste of his athleticism and pass-rushing ability. Keep in mind that Bruce Smith was able to rack of the majority of his career sacks playing as a 3-4 DE. You can have CJ line up at DE and run stunts with an OLB like Hardy to rush the passer.

I wouldn't ask Hardy to beef up, wouldn't want him to lose any of that speed/agility.

McDermott did that with Trent Cole regularly.

sigh.

Trent Cole, who could not be reached for comment, told reporters earlier this season that he did not like McDermott's zone-blitzing schemes, which required the defensive end to sometimes drop back into pass coverage.

I hate McDermott now...

Yup, you still need a NT that commands a double team or you'll have a guard blocking the ILB that's trying to blitz and the guard will win that matchup most of the time.

If you don't have a NT that can command double teams, then you need to get really creative with blitzing schemes in order to generate pressure, but there's a big risk involved with that.

I see this as a way to get the most out of our talent on defense..right now our 4-3 LBs are down to D-listers besides Anderson, we have some guys on the DE side who are talented but are limited by the play of the poor LB blitzes..we put some of our best DE's at OLB and all of a sudden we put more talent on the field then we had. Not saying it is going to work but this is probably why they would..get the good players on the field.

Yup, it acknowledges that we're lacking in talent at DT.
