Breaking down the defense

The jump we took on the offensive side of the ball this off season isn't even possible in madden...Then again the set back we took on defense is worthy of job's being lost and players being benched...The defense we had last season hit the right gaps, and didn't over pursue...Its strictly coaching, Dan Connor played great last year, so did Anderson and we didn't have Davis as well. I understand Beason is a huge loss but my God it's hideous. Last season our defense held us in game's where this season is the complete opposite...But both resulting in 1-5 starts!

It starts up front, as good as Charles Johnson is he seems to struggle versus the run and get's sucked up a lot on run plays. Fua and Terrell are below average DT's with McClain pulling away from Fua as the season goes on.

This is when I stopped reading after I realized you know nothing about football.

Given the different nature of the positions they play, I would expect Terrell's name to be called more often. But I do agree with you that Fox's defense was better. Maybe that's a function of the new scheme. Maybe it's personnel (but I kind of doubt that). It seems like this group misses a lot of tackles too, but that's probably just my imagination.

I wonder how Fox would have done with a QB like Cam. Even though he's a rookie, he strikes me as a guy who can make a bad staff look good.

I think it's a combination of the loss of Beason, our defensive general, some players starting that really have no business starting (I'll give our rookie DTs a pass, but Captain, Conner (disappointing this year...) and whoever our other LB not named Anderson is wouldn't start for 31 other teams) and installing a new defense that it just seems they're not totally grasping yet. And a breakdown in fundamentals that's probably a result of having to overthink due to the new scheme.

I think the return of Beason, the experience in the system, and maybe a couple new starters (DT, CB primarily) will get this defense at least respectable again. That probably won't happen this season.

It appears to me it is a combo of schemes and players.I think the scheme is dependant on haviving a stud at NT and based on what I onbserved both of our tackles are getting moved around and not covering their gaps.We still cannot defend a stud TE which was a problem we had when Fox was here.

We just need to go into offseason thinking defense defense defense. Draft a DT in the first 2 rounds and sign a big time DT. Heres my thinking.

DE - Johnson

DT - FA DT

DT - McClain/Fua/rookie

DE - Hardy

OLB - Anderson

MLB - Beason

OLB - Davis

CB - Gamble , Hogan

CB - Munnerlyn, Butler

S - Godfrey

S - Martin

Obviously, this is just adding 2 people on the defense and you can add depth through rest of picks in the draft and free agency.

Offensive side of the ball is good IMO. OL could use RT but maybe we get lucky and Otah comes back to camp fit and ready to go. With Gettis coming back, I dont see WR as a need and I think we will re-sign Shockey.

This team is a year or two away - im confident.

It all starts with the DTs. Even with Beason and Thomas missing (not including Edwards because he is an unknown) if we have AVERAGE DT play, Johnson's, Hardy's, and our linebacking core production would increase.

Which is exactly the reason why we hardly blitz.

Our DTs are bad, everything else..is.. acceptable.
