The aspect of that stat that pisses me off is that we have completely ignored our running backs in situations between the 20 and 5 of our opponent. Its like the only way to get down to the goal line is to pass the ball?? I understand that Cam Newton's pass today that got tipped was a bit of bad luck b/c Smith was going to come open but Chud needs to realize he is playing with a ROOKIE QB. The more attempts you give him the more chance there is more a mistake at that end of the field. I don't understand why we abandon the run in those situations considering the room for error at the 15 yard line.

He is great at calling plays down the field where guys come open but his play calling in tight situations is absolutely ATROCIOUS. Give it to those backs every once in a while to pound on the defense at that area of the field. We'll have more success.

Seriously bro, how many threads are you and Happy Panther going to make today. Go be a fan of a team that isn't rebuilding if you want to win now. Ron Rivera has already stated they were going to go all out on passing this season to make sure we establish our identity as an explosive team whilst we rebuild (the same thing Norv Turner did with Philip Rivers his rookie season) instead of doing it 3 years down the road when we have a veteran team (why the Falcon's suck so bad this year is because they lost their identity trying to become explosive and the only reason they were so good on offense this game is because our run defense sucks and Julio Jones was out so they relied on their old gameplan.)

Rivers didn't play his rookie season

Seriously bro, at least this is a thread about football and not a the most recent twitter post or whining about what some other stupid forum in another city says.

Agreed, Chud is a mad genius with this air coryell offense. It's great, and almost unheard of with what he's doing. The only problem I have is his play calling in certain situations (which is suspect)

I've no doubt another year under his belt, and the return of Gettis will more or less help spread the offense, but as of now he he needs to at least bring the pass-run ratio 60/40.

ESPECIALLY in the redzone.

He's going to be a good one, no doubt about it.

I can come up with allot of reasons why this is happening but here are two. For one Cam Newton is Dangerous with the Football and you feed those guys. Number two is that most teams run over our defense and chew up clock in the process making us resort to passing the football. We have never had a 2 TD lead this year and with the Defense playing the way it is we never will.

Awesome post man. This is what I was getting at for the most part. I've said over and over again that I LOVE our passing game and LOVE finally having a franchise QB in Cam. I wanted us to draft him and knew he was gonna be good, and for the most part Chud has done great in putting him in situations that utilize his abilities, talents, and put him in a position for success...

Until we get into the red zone (mainly outside of the 5 as you mentioned). When we're 5 or in, Chud seems to remember we have two good RBs and has great run plays designed for Cam. But if we're further out than that but still in the redzone, the run seems like an afterthought.

That's mainly what brought my attention to the run to pass ratio for today's game because that first INT was totally unnecessary, and I don't put it on Cam. But, I feel like his runs are so predictable in terms of situations and his preference to air it out is so blatant that teams really don't care about our RBs anymore... Also, I think there are some fundamental flaws in the runs designs themselves...

With this OL, DLo and Stew should not be getting tackled at the LOS when our opponent is dropping 7-8 into coverage, but it keeps happening.

That's what frustrates me. I want us to air it out, I want us to attack, but I want us to be smart and put points on the board, and for a guy that specialized in TEs, the redzone playcalling for the most part leaves a lot to be desired so far.

Help Cam out, he can do a lot by himself, but he can't do it all.

Was talking about that earlier.

From one extreme(run every play) to the other(pass every play).

Oh, and enough DWill "run up the gut" plays. It's essentially forfeiting a down.

People talk about penalties and defense/ST being the problem, but our offense is just as bad. An improvement over last year, but that's comparing horse sh*t to dog sh*t.

Let me attempt to save everyone some time.

Run/Pass play calling is not the problem. Run defense is, and it has been all season. As long as we can't stop anyone, we will continue to lose games. Scoring has not been a problem the whole year, and we will be lucky if we can keep Chud next year because someone is going to recognize this teams turn around, so lets stop bitchin about this.

Its either "We pass too much" or "We run too much". Its a game of inches. If we would have completed a couple more passes, ran for a few more yards, and made more stops on defense with the exact plays called we would have been praising our team and coaching staff. GAME OF INCHES.

There are multiple facets of the game that can be discussed. Just because the defense is the glaring problem doesn't mean there aren't other issues or other things that can be talked about you know.
