Just sitting here watching Fua and McClain get abused.

I personally think they are both getting better. They still seem to get caught on one major gash per game but I went nearly the whole game without cringing in fear before each Saints snap, so I'd call it an improvement.

Besides, decent DTs are extremely hard to find right now, and you really can't just throw one into the line and expect them to perform.

okay, and the goal is to put them in these situations now....so then we the team as a whole is farther along and legitimately ready they will be ready to make that play.

No point wasting reps on someone like a Pat Williams. Doesn't matter if he can do the job better today. Winning 5 vs. 6 games doesn't matter.....getting better quickly is more important.

I'm not talking about a Pat Williams type player, I'm talking about exploring a trade for a younger player who could have an immediate impact.

With our record we have what project to be some pretty valuable picks to trade away right now.

I'm looking for the equivalent of an Olsen trade at the DT position... not saying we're going to find that, but I sure hope we're exploring it.

Yeah, just saw the last defensive series and my mind is made up. You gotta start Fields over Fua.

Fields isn't a world beater, but he holds the point of attack and doesn't make crucial errors. He can recognize the screen pass and adjust, so on and so on...McClain makes plays often enough to compensate for his errors. Fua does not.

and there could be come a point where Fua could not be worth the reps. As you stated, there is a clear difference in play w/ our 2 rookie DTs.

I mean, if you can solve all your DT problems just by selecting 2 guys in the 3rd round it would be an easy fix for NFL teams. McClain at this point fully deserves the "Cam treatment".

but if in the next few games Fua doesn't show more growth.....I will agree his reps probably need to be shared more.

I think the people who want to let them play and "grow" haven't actually watched them play.

If you actually watch them, at least in Fua's case, his play doesn't warrant him keeping time on the field. They are responsible for giving up key plays in big moments on many occasions. Just because he's a rookie, it doesn't mean the team should suffer on this level when there is an alternative.

Nothing wrong with letting a rookie learn on the bench if their play doesn't warrant their starting position.

Hilarious that people think they letting them start is going to make them elite players. They will become dominant players if they are good enough. Getting schooled week in and week out isn't what is going to make them good or bad. And they've been bad.

I see what you are saying, but sometimes you can't fix everything in a year. Just because people run the ball on us doesn't mean that they couldn't just as well have passed it on us. There are a lot of holes both talent and experience wide in the Defense. I think you do the team a disservice by trading a way future picks for someone who may or may not work out or fit your system. Plus in a lot of those games we could have just as easily won on the offensive side of the ball. Just comes down to we have to learn to win. Wasn't like the Saints Defense was all world, they just made plays on offense when they had to and that was the difference in the game.

I'm just frustrated because we're so close to being 4-1 or 5-0 and I'm watching these young guys get blown off the LOS... it's not the only thing we need to fix, but it's close to the top. I do agree that you have to be careful about trading away picks, but this is an area where we might be able to find someone that has an immediate impact.
