Glad to see this. NFL had to send a message. This is also the final nail in the coffin on any Saint's argument on the issue.

The BEST part of the whole scuffle, is that when Smitty was done ripping Malcolm Jenkin's manhood off, how he just walked away full of swag and awesomeness. You guys wanna talk about Cam's swag? His rookie swag is nothing compared to our seasoned veteran.

That's a load of poo, and everyone outside of New Orleans knows it.

he said Greg doesn't teach blatant cheap shots.....that doesn't really mean Greg didn't teach him to play cheap and dirty. Greg probably prefers his cheap shots be a little less obvious and debatable....but without doubt he coaches that and makes it part of his gameplans.

Interesting comment:

However, after playing for Saints’ defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, I know he doesn’t coach his players to take blatant cheap shots.

o rly?

Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams, by announcing similar intentions for Peyton Manning(notes) before the fact, seems to be walking a dangerous line. Here's Williams, from an interview on 104.5 The Zone in Nashville, going all Buddy Ryan on Peyton Manning (via ESPN's AFC South Blog).

“This guy’s got a great clock in his head. The big thing is that he throws the ball so early that we’re going to have to do a good job of finding ways to get to him and when we do get to him we’re going to have to make sure he gets a couple ‘remember me’ shots when we get there ...”

Then, when asked about his players worrying about incurring 15-yard penalties for hitting Manning, he added this:

“Here’s the deal. When you put too much of that type of worry on a warrior’s mind, he doesn’t play all out. If it happens, it happens. And the only thing you’d like for me to say is that if it happens you hope he doesn’t get back up and play again.”

COVERING STEVE SMITH: Carolina wide receiver Steve Smith has been perhaps the biggest thorn in the side of the Saints recently. In his past eight games against the Saints, Smith has caught 52 passes for 745 yards and seven touchdowns.

Those numbers haven't been lost on Williams, who also has been victimized by Smith in the past.

"He's an unbelievable football player," Williams said. "He does things that obviously you can't coach. They are going to do two or three things that we haven't even seen on film, where they try to scheme a big play to him.

"The thing that I think that he does the best is, for a little guy when the ball goes up in the air, he plays like a 6-10 center. He goes and gets it. But what we've got to do is turn his little body over, so that when he does get it he lands on his head and he doesn't come back in for a while."

Williams is promising a very physical game when the Saints play the Minnesota Vikings in the NFL season opener in September. The defensive coordinator singled out Favre: "We have to send messages to every offense about how physical it's going to be when they play us. Those messages are out there, starting with No. 4," he said, alluding to Favre's jersey number.

When asked if he wanted his players to try to “knock out” QBs, Williams said: “I sure hope so and I am not going to apologize for it either. You kill the head and the body will die. That’s usually how it goes, you hit the quarterback and the whole team feels it. We are hoping to continue it this week.”http://fifthdown.blogs.nytimes.com/2010/02/02/do-the-saints-play-dirty/
there's more.

people will cry "it's part of the game", but the truth is if any of a number of less popular teams had said it, you'd better believe there would be repercussions from the league, but there hasn't been. because of katrina and 40 years of suck, saints became the kid the league wants to cheer for so they are allowed to get away with a lot of crap that most teams wouldn't. brady gets penalties created because he whines or gets hurt in a way that many other QBs have before him but the league never really seemed to care. the saints get the NFL to turn it's head in the period of time that is it's most fine heavy era over while they are supposedly trying to protect players from long term injuries.

it's only a matter of time before the one guy that keeps them from sucking and falling back into obscurity gets a career ending injury. if that happens, they have only their DC to thank for creating the precedence. i'm sure that the player that does it will get fined and may end up suspended for a couple games, but the saints will have had it coming and i can't say that i would shed a tear unless it's of joy.
