Job Opportunity - what would you do?

My current job is close to home, takes me about 10 minutes to get to work. The work load is light, and I have a lot of downtime. One of my good friends works with me, and the team in general has some cool people. Drawback, I have no benefits and the pay isn't great.

I applied for a new job and interviewed with the recruiter. I'm set to interview with the company on Friday. The job is farther away (difference of about 15 minutes of driving), requires more work, and is only guaranteed for 6 months. There's a chance of getting hired on full time, but nothing for sure. The positive is, it pays $5 an hour more than my current job. I've had a quick phone interview with the company already and they seem very interested in me. They too offer no benefits, but the pay is better.

I'm having trouble deciding what I should do if I get the job...and it looks likely I'll get it.

5/hr isn't worth trading a place you like for one you might hate IMO.

I agree...I'm still going to interview Friday. Hopefully they give me a tour of the facilities and I get to meet my potential co-workers. $5/hour isn't a significant pay raise and it is semi-negated with the increased amount I'd be spending on gas. But, at my current job, there is no opportunity of advancement in the company, so this could be a potential plus if I decide to change jobs.

Without gettin too much in your business...

It also is worth considering what % of your current earnings that 5/hr is.

The answer to take it vs pass is radically different if that's a 50% raise over say a 15%.

That is a good point...the raise is significant enough if it was a full time position that I would consider it a nice raise. I'm really concerned about the 6 months guaranteed...because I already have a full time job.

In this job market and with the economy continuing to struggle, I would not trade a full time job for a 6 month one. Full time jobs are too valuable.

I would go to the interview, and bring up the reservations about the 6 month time frame. If you nail the interview, and they know that the 6 months may be an issue, then you may be able to go straight into the permanent position. It is all about how you sell yourself during the interview.

This is very much what I'm hoping to do. A permanent position offsets every other concern I have about the job. We'll see...

is it what you want to be doing? audio stuff?

Hell no, I already make twice as much as I'd get in a studio. If it was moving into audio engineering full time, even for a slight cut in pay, I'd take it. This is a pretty menial office type position. Unfortunately I have experience in this area...

    • No one is asking him to be Tom Brady. They're just asking him to be as good if not better than Cooper Rush, Jimmy Garoppolo and Carson Wentz. We'd like Young to be better than Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield, but we're not even asking for that. No matter how you cut it he's going to be considered a bust for what was given up for him. He should be outpacing Cam Newton, Jake Delhomme and Kerry Collins game for game in their careers. He should at least be challenging the clutch level of Brady, Mahomes, Stafford, Goff, Garoppolo, Burrow, Hurts and Purdy. Remember that's based on the draft capital given up for Young, and not the extremely low bar Young has actually set for himself.
    • Even if you cherry pick Bryce post benching and ignore everything else and project it out over a full season….. there is no statistical  argument Kyler has ever been worse.   I’m no Murray fan as I agree he is more athlete than QB.   And I’m open to Bryce improving and support us continuing to develop him as this point.
    • We need LBs--build the roster from the bottom up.  On offense, we have Coker who has been huge...if you fill your weaknesse without having to use free agent $$$ or draft picks--win win.
